Chapter 1 - The Ring on the Marble TrayThe silence in the master suite of the Gold Coast penthouse was heavier than the sleet driving against the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Adrian Blackwell pushed open the double doors at 11:15 a.m., expecting the familiar scent of chamomile tea and white ginger, expecting Camille’s soft footsteps on the hardwood, expecting her to look up from a tablet with that quiet, grounding expression that had anchored him through a thousand corporate storms.
Instead, the rooms smelled of cold air and emptiness.
Sienna Vey trailed behind him, her Christian Louboutin heels clicking sharply against the marble foyer. She tossed her faux-fur coat over the back of an ivory velvet sofa, her sharp eyes scanning the minimalist luxury with predatory satisfaction.
"Well," Sienna purred, slipping her arms around Adrian’s waist from behind and pressing her cheek against his shoulder. "The great standoff is over. You’re a free man, Adrian. No more looking over your shoulder, no more walking on eggshells around a ghost who couldn't even bother to show up and fight for you."
Adrian didn't answer immediately. He stared down at the marble entry table.
There, resting precisely in the center of a silver tray, was a single object: Camille’s heavy platinum wedding band, nestled inside the hollow of a pale, dried lily petal. Beside it lay his house keys.
A cold prickle of unease rippled up the back of his neck—a sudden, sharp shadow of the warning his attorney had barked down the phone just hours ago. Court begins in forty-five minutes, Adrian.
"She left her ring," Adrian muttered, his voice dropping into a register that made Sienna pull back slightly.
"Of course she did, darling. It’s theater," Sienna dismissed with a light, dismissive laugh, walking toward the wet bar to pour herself a scotch. "Women like Camille don't know how to exit a stage without a final, dramatic gesture. She wanted you to find it. She wanted you to feel guilty. But give it forty-eight hours, and her lawyer will be calling about the settlement figures. She's bluffing, Adrian. She always breaks."
Adrian forced himself to nod, swallowing the tightness in his throat. He reached out and picked up the ring. It was surprisingly heavy, cold against his palm. She wouldn't just walk away, he told himself, channeling the narrative Sienna had fed him for months. Camille's entire identity is Blackwell & Rourke. She built this life with me. She's just... punishing me for not giving her enough attention.
He pocketed the ring, turning to Sienna with a forced, confident smirk. "You're right. Let's order lunch. We have a company merger to celebrate tonight."

At that exact moment, two miles away in a high-rise office overlooking Michigan Avenue, a financial journalist named Marcus Vance received an anonymous tip on an encrypted server. The tip contained three scanned documents: a signed final divorce decree bearing Camille Rowan’s maiden name, a transfer order of Blackwell & Rourke shares, and a formal press release from Northstar Dominion.
Marcus stared at his screen, his coffee mug frozen halfway to his mouth. Blackwell & Rourke thought they were the apex predators of Chicago finance. They had no idea a hurricane had just made landfall.
