Chapter 9 - The Unwritten PageFar across the city, in a modest, unfurnished one-bedroom apartment in a rundown northern suburb, Adrian Blackwell sat at a cheap laminate kitchen table.

There were no marble countertops here, no panoramic river views, no whispering executives, and no sycophantic PR strategists to whisper grandiose delusions into his ear. There was only a blinking cursor on a secondhand laptop screen and a stack of job rejection letters from every major financial institution in the country. The non-compete clause was ironclad; his name was blacklisted from Wall Street to Silicon Valley.
His phone buzzed on the counter—a notification from a grocery delivery app reminding him of his payment failure.
Adrian stared at his empty hands, the cold realization finally settling into his marrow. He reached into his coat pocket—the same coat he had worn the day of the divorce hearing—and pulled out a forgotten item.
It was Camille’s heavy platinum wedding band, which he had snatched off the silver tray before fleeing the penthouse weeks ago. He had kept it hidden, foolishly believing it was a talisman of unfinished business, a proof that she would eventually come back to fix his life.
Now, sitting in the silence of his tiny, cold apartment, he looked down at the metal ring.
The interior was engraved with a tiny inscription he had never bothered to read during all their years of marriage: Build together.

Adrian let out a ragged, broken breath, finally dropping the ring onto the laminate table where it rolled in a small, pathetic circle before coming to a complete, permanent stop.
He didn't pick it back up. There was nothing left to build, and no one left to save him.
