Chapter 11 - The Phantom PortfolioThe autumn wind whipped off Lake Michigan, rattling the reinforced glass of Northstar Dominion’s headquarters. Inside her sprawling corner office, Camille Rowan stood with her arms crossed, staring down at a confidential dossier stamped with a red EYES ONLY banner.

Her chief of operations, Marcus Vance—recruited directly from his investigative desk after blowing the whistle on Blackwell & Rourke—stepped closer to the desk, laying down three additional corporate filings.

"It’s not just Blackwell & Rourke’s remnants, Camille," Marcus said, his tone grim. "Someone is quietly buying up distressed debt in the logistics and shipping sectors across the Midwest. They’re using shell companies registered in the Caymans, but the signature of the transactions... the specific way they’re hedging against our supply chain routes—it has a familiar footprint."

Camille narrowed her eyes, tracing the numbers with her finger. "Adrian doesn't have the capital or the credit to coordinate an offshore leveraged buyout. He’s working out of a studio apartment in Evanston."

"He’s not working alone," Marcus countered, sliding a photograph across the desk.

The image showed Adrian sitting in a dimly lit booth at an upscale steakhouse in downtown Chicago. Seated across from him was Viktor Sterling, a notoriously ruthless hedge fund manager known for hostile corporate raids and backdoor liquidations—a man who had spent years looking for an entry point to tear down Northstar’s market dominance.

"Sterling," Camille murmured, a cold chill running down her spine. Not out of fear, but from the realization that desperation made desperate men dangerous allies.

"Sterling wants our shipping lanes, and Adrian wants his revenge," Marcus warned. "They’re building a shadow portfolio to trigger a liquidity crunch just before our Q3 earnings call."

Camille didn't flinch. She simply turned her head toward the Chicago skyline, a calm, razor-sharp smile touching the corners of her lips. "Let them build it. A house of cards built on spite always collapses before the wind even hits it."
