Chapter 4 - The Collapse of the Inner CircleBy midnight, the glittering illusion Adrian Blackwell had spent a decade building lay in smoking ruins.

The federal injunction had hit Blackwell & Rourke’s credit ratings like a tactical missile. Moody’s downgraded their bonds to junk status within four hours. By 8:00 p.m., three of their largest institutional investors—clients Camille had personally secured years ago during the Dallas risk crisis—had publicly announced their withdrawal of capital, citing a catastrophic lack of leadership integrity.

Adrian sat alone in his darkened corner office, the glowing neon lights of Chicago casting long, grotesque shadows across his expensive walnut desk. The bottle of 35-year-old scotch sat half-empty beside him, but the alcohol wasn't numbing the crushing weight in his chest. It was only making the humiliation burn brighter.

The heavy oak door creaked open. Adrian didn't look up, assuming it was Sienna bringing another round of frantic demands.

"I told you to leave me alone," Adrian muttered, his voice hollow.

"I'm not Sienna, Adrian."

Adrian froze. He slowly raised his head.

Standing in the doorway was Richard Vance, holding a cardboard banker's box filled with personal desk items. The senior partner looked older, smaller, his expensive tailored suit suddenly looking like armor that had failed its wearer.

"Richard," Adrian said, clearing his throat. "What is this? Are you packing up?"

"The partners held an emergency vote at nine o'clock," Richard said, his tone devoid of the warmth they had shared through years of golf club camaraderie and shared triumphs. "We voted unanimously to strip you of your chairmanship. We’re petitioning the court to restructure under Northstar’s receivership to save our own pensions."

Adrian leaped to his feet, knocking his crystal tumbler to the floor where it shattered into a thousand glittering shards. "You can't do that! I founded this firm! My name is on the damn building!"

"Your name was on the building because Camille let you put it there," Richard said quietly, stepping closer and placing the banker's box down on the edge of the desk. "We all thought you were the genius, Adrian. Even I believed it for a long time. But tonight, when Northstar’s legal team walked us through the structural architecture Camille built between 2018 and 2024... we realized something terrifying."

Richard paused, looking Adrian dead in the eye.

"Without Camille, you were just a guy in a nice suit talking loudly in empty rooms. She didn't just walk away from a marriage, Adrian. She unplugged your life support."

Before Adrian could formulate a reply, Richard turned and walked out, closing the door softly behind him. The click of the latch sounded like a gunshot in the silent room.
