Chapter 14 - Into the Lion’s Den

Declan plugged the flash drive into his encrypted laptop in the study. The screen flickered, displaying a live video feed of five-year-old Penny sitting calmly in a brightly lit, sterile concrete room, playing with a wooden block. She didn't look injured, but standing just out of camera view was a man wearing a silver wolf mask.
"You have twelve hours, Declan," the synthesized voice echoed from the laptop speakers. "Bring the entire portfolio of Veritas Holdings, transfer one hundred million dollars in untraceable cryptocurrency to the address on your screen, and come alone to the abandoned railway switching yard in North District 9. If you bring the police, your brother, or a single tactical enforcer, the girl gets shipped overseas tonight."
Mia slammed her hands down on the desk, tears streaming down her face, her voice shaking with rage and despair. "We have to call the federal marshals! We have to track that signal!"
"No," Declan said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he closed the laptop lid. The absolute coldness of the old mafia boss—the man who felt nothing, trusted no one, and ruled through iron discipline—flooded back into his eyes. "If we involve law enforcement, they use Penny as leverage to wipe out our entire leverage network. They want me. They want the Shaw bloodline on their knees."
Aaron stepped forward, his fists clenched so tight his knuckles turned pure white. "You're not going into that yard alone, Declan. That's a textbook execution zone."

"I have to," Declan replied quietly. He opened his desk drawer and pulled out a heavy titanium-alloy combat vest, strapping it over his chest. "Because if I don't go alone, Penny dies. You stay here. Keep Mia safe, lock down the estate, and wait for my signal. If I don't check in by midnight, you burn every asset we own to track them down."
As Declan walked out toward his customized armored bulletproof sedan, he felt the heavy weight of the past pressing down on him. For years, he had believed that closeness was a vulnerability, that caring for people made you weak. Loving Penny had been his greatest risk—and now, he was walking straight into hell to pay for it.
