Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Ledger

Declan’s private study smelled of aged bourbon, leather, and old paper. The heavy oak doors locked automatically behind them, sealing off the sprawling hotel ballroom. Mia sat stiffly on the edge of a velvet armchair, holding Penny, who had finally fallen asleep with her head tucked against her mother's shoulder.

Declan poured two fingers of amber liquid into a crystal glass, but he didn't drink. He stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the rain-slicked neon streets of the city.

"You're playing a very dangerous game, Mia Carter," Declan said without turning around. "If you are using an orphaned child as a pawn to extract money from the Shaw family, you picked the wrong monster to manipulate."

"I don't want your money," Mia spat back, her voice shaking with righteous exhaustion. "I wanted to feed my daughter tonight. I wanted a paycheck from the catering company so we wouldn't be locked out of our apartment tomorrow morning. I didn't ask for this. I didn't even know who you were until the banquet manager screamed your name."

Declan turned slowly. He studied her—the frayed cuffs of her uniform, the raw redness of her knuckles from harsh dishwashing soap, the fierce, protective glare in her eyes. She wasn't an operative. She wasn't an assassin. She was a ghost from his brother's secret life.

"Aaron was declared dead four years ago," Declan stated, walking over to his mahogany desk and unlocking a heavy steel drawer. He pulled out a thick, black leather-bound dossier stamped with red ink: CLASSIFIED - AARON S. SHAW. "He betrayed this family. He embezzled six million dollars, handed our shipping routes to the Moretti syndicate, and ran. If he had a wife and a child, it means he was building a second life while bleeding us dry."

"He didn't run," Mia said, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "He tried to fix it."

Declan stopped. "What did you say?"

"He told me everything a week before he died," Mia said, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "He said he didn't steal the money. He said the audit was falsified by someone inside your inner circle. Someone who wanted him gone so they could take control of the ports."

Declan’s heart hammered against his ribs. "Who?"

Before Mia could answer, the security monitor on the corner of the desk flickered violently. The screen displayed the private corridor outside the study. Graham Pike stood there, flanked by four armed enforcers, holding a small digital override device. The hallway lights blinked out, plunging the camera feed into pitch blackness.

"They're coming," Mia gasped, clutching Penny tighter.
