Chapter 3 - The Breach

The heavy oak doors didn't just open; they shattered inward as a heavy-duty hydraulic battering ram tore through the deadbolt. Shrapnel and splintered wood exploded across the Persian rug.
Declan didn't flinch. In a fluid, lethal motion born of a thousand street wars, he drew a suppressed SIG Sauer P226 from his shoulder holster, dropped into a combat crouch, and fired three rapid shots through the smoke. The glass pane of the hallway light fixture shattered above the intruders, forcing the lead enforcer to duck.
"Secure the woman and the child!" a familiar, icy voice commanded from the corridor.
Graham Pike stepped through the smoke, his usual calm, corporate demeanor completely stripped away. In his right hand, he held a sleek submachine gun. The crisp lines of his tailored suit were ruined by the dark, sinister aura of a man who had nothing left to hide.
"I'm disappointed in you, Declan," Graham said, shaking his head slowly as he stepped over the splintered wreckage of the door. "You were always the visionary, the face on the billboards, the untouchable boss. But you were blind. You trusted family, and family is a weakness."
Declan kept his pistol leveled directly at the center of Graham's chest. "You framed Aaron."
"Aaron was weak," Graham laughed, a cold, empty sound. "He wanted to walk away from the syndicate, marry a common waitress, and live in a suburban cottage with a white picket fence. He was going to expose our distribution networks to the federal prosecutors just to save his own soul. So, I cleaned up the mess. I forged the ledger entries, I arranged the warehouse fire, and I gave you a convenient scapegoat."
Mia pressed herself flat against the back of the study wall, shielding the sleeping child with her own body. "You killed him," she whispered. "Three weeks ago, you pushed him off the loading dock at Pier 4."
"He wouldn't stay quiet," Graham smiled coldly, raising his weapon. "And now, unfortunately, history is repeating itself. Clean up crews are already sealing the perimeter. By morning, the police will find a tragic murder-suicide scene inside the Shaw estate. The grieving mafia boss, driven mad by the ghost of his traitorous brother, eliminates an intruder and takes his own life."

Declan’s finger tightened on the trigger. "You think thirty men at the dinner table answer to you, Graham?"
"Thirty men?" Graham smirked. "Declan, I've been running the payroll, managing the offshore accounts, and buying off your captains for seven years. They don't answer to the Shaw bloodline anymore. They answer to the man who signs the checks."
