Chapter 16 - The Architect of Ruin

Declan kept his hands steady, his mind racing to calculate every angle, every escape route, and every sniper perch hidden in the surrounding fog. "You were my most trusted advisor, Marcus. Why?"

"Trust?" Marcus scoffed, stepping closer to the edge of the gantry platform while keeping one hand resting casually on Penny’s small shoulder. "Declan, you never trusted anyone in your life. You used people like chess pieces, discarded them when they stumbled, and hoarded the empire's wealth like a dragon sitting on a pile of ash. I built the legal framework that kept your hands clean while you ruled the underworld. But when you decided to 'go legitimate' and give away our ports to charity, you threw away billions of dollars in enterprise value."

"So you framed Aaron," Declan said, his voice dripping with venom. "You falsified the audit, you faked his death, and you orchestrated the whole civil war."

"Aaron was naive," Marcus smiled coldly. "He found out about the offshore skimming accounts I set up under Verita Holdings. He was going to expose me to you. So I gave Graham the forged evidence, told him Aaron was a traitor, and let your own paranoia do the dirty work."

Penny whimpered, tears spilling down her cheeks as she tried to pull away from the operative holding her arm. "Let me go! You're hurting me!"

"Shut up, brat," the operative snarled, tightening his grip.

A sudden, sharp crack echoed through the foggy night air.

It wasn't a gunshot. It was the distinct metallic snap of a heavy tactical sniper rifle discharging from the top of an adjacent water tower three hundred yards away.

The operative holding Penny jerked violently, his shoulder exploding in a crimson spray as a high-caliber round tore through his collarbone. He collapsed instantly, releasing the little girl.

Marcus's eyes widened in sheer panic. "What the—?!"

Before Marcus could draw his weapon, Penny scrambled away from the edge, diving behind a stack of wooden pallets.

From the shadows of the foggy yard, a deep, resonant voice cut through the damp air: "Nobody touches my niece."
