Chapter 8 - Shadows of the Past

Three weeks later, the Shaw estate looked entirely different. The armed guards at the gates had been replaced by discreet private security detail; the heavy iron grates over the windows were removed, letting the warm morning sunlight flood the marble hallways.

Mia sat in the sunroom, sketching designs for the new charitable foundation Declan was funding to support families of retired syndicate workers. Penny sat on the floor nearby, playing contentedly with her wooden music box, the tiny ballerina spinning gracefully to the tinny tune.

Declan walked in, carrying a small, wrapped box tied with a silver ribbon. He knelt down beside the little girl, clearing his throat.

Penny looked up, her green eyes wide and bright. "Hi, Uncle Declan."

Declan smiled—a genuine, warm expression that none of his business associates had ever seen in their lifetimes. He handed her the small box. "Open it."

Penny ripped off the paper. Inside lay a brand-new, beautifully crafted silver music box that played a much richer, cleaner melody, accompanied by a small silver locket engraved with the initials P.C.

"Thank you, Papa—I mean, Uncle Declan!" Penny corrected herself quickly, giggling.

May you like

Declan chuckled, gently tapping her nose. "You can call me whatever you want, Penny."

From the doorway, Aaron and Mia watched, smiling softly as the formidable mafia boss—a man feared across the entire underworld—sat cross-legged on the floor, helping a five-year-old child wind up a music box. The darkness of the past had finally been washed away by blood, truth, and forgiveness.
