Chapter 5 - Marin’s New RealityAcross town in a modest, sunlit apartment on the North Side, Marin Vale sat at her small kitchen table, staring blankly at the laptop screen. Her mother, Celeste, was standing by the stove, carefully stirring a pot of herbal tea, her eyes red-rimmed and filled with a mixture of disbelief and lingering terror.

"Marin... honey, is this real?" Celeste asked softly, pointing a trembling finger at the news report flashing on the screen. "Is this the man who helped you?"
Marin touched the thin layer of protective medical gauze still taped along her jawline. The burn was healing nicely under Dr. Marcus's care, but the psychological shock of that afternoon still echoed in her chest.
"Yes, Mom," Marin murmured. "That’s him. Callum Ashford."
"He’s... he’s suing his own wife for you?" Celeste shook her head, unable to comprehend the sheer scale of wealth and power involved. "People like that don't care about people like us, Marin. I'm afraid. What if they come after us? What if this billionaire changes his mind?"
Before Marin could answer, a sharp knock echoed at the front door.
Both women froze.
Marin stood up slowly, walking cautiously toward the entryway. She unlocked the heavy deadbolt and pulled the door open.
Standing in the hallway were two impeccably dressed men in charcoal suits carrying sleek leather briefcases. Behind them stood a private security guard who looked like he could bench-press a minivan.
"Miss Marin Vale?" the lead attorney asked politely, flashing a silver badge and a business card.
"Yes?" Marin swallowed hard.
"I am Marcus Vance—no relation to the other Vances," the lawyer said with a thin, reassuring smile. "I am senior litigation counsel for Mr. Callum Ashford. We have some paperwork for you to sign regarding the civil settlement, the medical trust fund, and the permanent employment contract."
Marin blinked. "Permanent... employment contract?"
"Mr. Ashford has established a philanthropic foundation dedicated to supporting victims of workplace violence and service industry workers," Marcus explained, stepping inside with her permission. "He has appointed you as the executive director of the Vale-Ashford Community Fund, starting at an annual salary of two hundred thousand dollars, backed by a fully funded ten-million-dollar endowment."
Celeste dropped her wooden spoon on the kitchen floor with a loud clatter.
Marin stared at the lawyers, her brain entirely short-circuiting. "Two hundred thousand... Executive director? But I'm just a waitress from Bellamy House!"
"You were a waitress yesterday, Miss Vale," Marcus said smoothly, placing a thick leather folder on the kitchen table and opening it to a page marked with a sticky yellow flag. "Today, you're a symbol of corporate accountability. And Mr. Ashford doesn't do things by halves."

He slid a gold-plated pen across the table.
"All you have to do is sign."
