Chapter 10 - The Phoenix and the Promise

Six months later.

The summer sun shone brightly over the lush gardens of the newly opened Ava Bennett Healing Center, a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to protecting and rehabilitating survivors of domestic abuse, built entirely through the joint funding of the Carter Foundation.

Julian Vance (the imposter) had been sentenced to life in maximum security prison without the possibility of parole for identity theft, fraud, attempted murder, and practicing medicine without a license. Every victim of his surgical incompetence was compensated, and his reign of terror was permanently extinguished.

I stood on the balcony overlooking the center's crowded courtyard, watching women and children laugh in a safe, protected environment.

A pair of warm arms gently wrapped around my waist from behind. I didn't flinch. I didn't pull away. I leaned back into the solid, comforting chest of Ethan Carter.

"You created something incredible here, Ava," Ethan whispered, his lips softly brushing against my temple.

"We did," I corrected gently, turning in his arms to face him.

The bruises on my body had long faded, replaced by a radiant strength that no one could ever take from me again.

Ethan reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, simple velvet box. My heart skipped a beat, but this time, it wasn't out of fear—it was out of an overwhelming wave of joy.

He opened it, revealing not a massive diamond meant for show, but a delicate silver band holding a single, brilliant emerald—the color of hope.

"Ava Bennett," Ethan said, looking deep into my eyes with unshakeable devotion. "You’ve spent your life surviving monsters. Let me spend the rest of mine showing you what real love feels like. Will you marry me?"

Tears of pure happiness blurred my vision. I smiled, a genuine, radiant smile that reached my soul, and threw my arms around his neck.

May you like

"Yes, Ethan. A thousand times, yes."

Down below, the crowd cheered as the sun broke through the clouds, illuminating a future built not on secrets and fear, but on truth, freedom, and an everlasting love.
