Chapter 4 - The Midnight Breach

Ethan’s private safehouse was a secluded estate tucked deep into the hills, fortified with state-of-the-art security systems. Yet, peace remained an illusion.
That night, sleep refused to find me. Every shadow looked like Adrian; every gust of wind sounded like his voice. I walked down the grand marble hallway toward the kitchen to get a glass of water, only to see a faint light coming from Ethan’s study.
The door was slightly ajar. Ethan was sitting behind his mahogany desk, his tie loosened, sleeves rolled up, staring intensely at a bank of monitors. On the screens were financial traces, phone logs, and legal filings. He looked exhausted, the sharp lines of his jaw hardened by relentless focus.
I knocked softly. He looked up instantly, the tension in his shoulders relaxing the second he realized it was me.
"You should be sleeping," he said gently, standing up and reaching for a warm blanket draped over his chair. He walked over and wrapped it around my shoulders.
"I can't," I admitted, looking down at his desk. "What are you doing, Ethan? It’s two in the morning."
"I’m tearing his life apart piece by piece," Ethan replied, his voice terrifyingly calm. "I had my financial team audit the Children's Heart Hospital accounts. Adrian isn't just a surgeon, Ava. He’s been embezzling medical grant funds through offshore shell companies for three years. He’s been using the money to silence past victims of his malpractice."
I stared at him, stunned. "Malpractice?"
"Two years ago, a surgical mistake nearly killed a child. Adrian paid off the family using stolen foundation funds and blamed an assistant nurse who was subsequently blacklisted." Ethan stepped closer, his thumb gently brushing a stray lock of hair from my forehead. "He’s a monster who hides behind a scalpel. And I swear to you, Ava, he will never touch you again."
The proximity was overwhelming. The quiet intimacy of the room stretched between us, heavy with unsaid words. For a second, his eyes dropped to my lips, and my breath hitched.
May you like
"Ethan..." I whispered.
"I know," he murmured, stepping back just half an inch, exercising an agonizing amount of self-control. "I won't take advantage of your fear, Ava. You need time to heal. But you need to know... my feelings for you didn't start when I saw those bruises. I’ve loved you since the day you walked into my office and reorganized my chaotic life without asking for permission."
