Chapter 9 - The Shocking Truth Behind Dr. Vaughn

I took a slow step toward Adrian, my mind racing, calculating every inch of distance between us.

"You always were so arrogant, Adrian," I whispered, keeping his eyes locked onto mine. "You thought you were a god because you held hearts in your hands. But you made one huge mistake."

"And what was that?" Adrian sneered.

"You forgot that I was your secretary for two years," I said coldly.

With blinding speed, I didn't grab the gun—I reached into my pocket and slammed a high-frequency hospital defibrillator training pad, which I had taken from the medical kit in the hallway earlier, straight into the open wound on Adrian’s neck where Ethan had struck him two days prior. I hit the manual discharge button on the portable battery pack in my belt.

A high-voltage shock surged through Adrian’s nervous system.

Adrian gasped in excruciating shock, his muscles spasming violently. The gun flew from his hand, skidding across the hardwood floor. Ethan instantly seized the moment, diving forward and tackling Adrian to the ground with devastating force, pinning his hands behind his back just as the flashbang grenades of the SWAT team detonated in the courtyard outside.

Bright light flooded the room as armed officers burst through the shattered windows, securing Adrian on the floor.

As the officers pulled Adrian to his feet, a senior FBI agent stepped forward, looking down at the hand-cuffed surgeon with utter contempt.

"Dr. Adrian Vaughn... or should I say, Julian Vance?" the FBI agent announced.

The room went dead silent.

I froze, looking from the agent to the man I thought I knew. "What... what did you just call him?"

"He isn't Dr. Adrian Vaughn, Miss Bennett," the agent revealed, pulling out an official file. "The real Dr. Adrian Vaughn was a brilliant pediatric surgeon who died in a remote hiking accident in the Swiss Alps seven years ago. This man is Julian Vance—his disgraced medical twin brother who stole his identity, forged his credentials, and used plastic surgery to take over his life and medical practice."

My stomach turned to ice. The man I had been engaged to, the man who had touched me, hurt me, and tried to control me... was a complete lie. An imposter who didn't even possess a legal medical license.
