Chapter 2 - The Mask Slips on Live Television

By 8:00 AM the following morning, the city was in an uproar. What was supposed to be a routine press recap of the Carter Foundation Gala turned into a media firestorm. Adrian hadn't stayed quiet. By midnight, he had already booked an emergency interview on the city’s top morning news broadcast.

Sitting in Ethan’s glass-walled high-rise living room, I watched the television screen in horrified fascination. Adrian sat under the bright studio lights wearing a tailored charcoal suit, his expression a masterclass in tragic innocence.

"I am deeply saddened by the events of last night," Adrian told the anchor, his voice trembling with manufactured emotion. "The truth is, Ethan Carter has been pursuing my fiancée, Ava, for months. When she rejected his advances, he threatened my reputation. What happened last night was a malicious attempt by an arrogant billionaire to destroy a doctor's life simply because he couldn't buy the woman he wanted."

I gasped, dropping my mug of coffee onto the hardwood floor. It shattered, dark liquid pooling around my bare feet.

Before I could move, Ethan was there. He pulled me back from the broken ceramic, his eyes scanning the news broadcast before fixing on me. "Don't look at it, Ava."

"He’s spinning it," I whispered, tears burning my eyes. "He’s telling the world that you're abusing your power to steal me away. He’s turning the victim into the villain!"

Ethan didn't flinch. He picked up his phone, dialed his lead legal counsel, and put the call on speaker. "Marcus," Ethan said coldly, staring directly at Adrian's face on the screen. "Initiate the emergency protocol. File a restraining order on behalf of Ava Bennett immediately. And release the medical logs from the private clinic we visited last night."

"Ethan, wait!" I pleaded. "If you publish those photos of my bruises, my entire private life becomes public domain. I’ll be analyzed, judged, debated..."

Ethan turned to me, his gaze softening, filled with a fierce, quiet protective rage. "Ava, he thinks he owns the narrative because he’s used to controlling you in the dark. The moment we bring this into the light, his power evaporates. But I won't release a single piece of evidence without your consent. You hold the pen now. Not him. Not me."
