Chapter 10 - Dawn of a New Era

Three days later, the Connecticut estate felt entirely different.

The heavy fog had lifted, replaced by brilliant autumn sunlight streaming through the oversized windows of the west wing playroom. The air smelled crisp, clean, and entirely pure.

Lucas and Leo sat on the plush carpet, building an elaborate Lego castle with more energy and focus than they had shown in two agonizing years. Laughter—real, bright, unburdened laughter—echoed down the hallways for the first time since Isabella died.

I stood by the doorway, packing my old leather suitcase on the wooden floor.

Footsteps approached behind me. I didn't need to turn around to know who it was.

"Leaving so soon?" Vincent’s deep voice resonated quietly in the room.

I zipped up the suitcase and stood, turning to face him. He looked different—the crushing weight that had bowed his shoulders when we first met was gone, replaced by the steady, unyielding strength of a father who had fought through hell and won.

"My job here is done, Vincent," I said softly, picking up the handle of my bag. "The boys are healthy. The threat is neutralized. Federal authorities took custody of Vance and Blake this morning."

Vincent stepped closer, his dark eyes searching my face. "You saved my sons, Claire. You saved my soul. A mafia boss doesn't just let someone like you walk away into the night."

"I'm not part of your world, Vincent," I smiled faintly. "I never was."

"Maybe not," he said, reaching out to gently touch my hand, stopping me in my tracks. "But you're the only person in the world I trust completely. And the boys... they asked if their favorite person in the world was coming back for Sunday dinner."

I looked past him into the playroom, where Lucas and Leo were holding up a completed Lego tower, shouting my name across the room.

May you like

I looked back down at Vincent, the lingering walls around my heart finally giving way to the warmth of the autumn sun.

"Well," I smiled, letting go of the suitcase handle. "I suppose I can stay for dinner."
