Chapter 16 - Shadows Lifting

The following week brought a profound, almost surreal calm to the Moretti estate.

The perimeter cameras still monitored every inch of the Connecticut property, and armed guards still patrolled the gates, but the underlying tension—the poison in the air, the invisible dagger at our backs—was gone.

Upstairs in the west wing, the transformation in Lucas and Leo was nothing short of miraculous. The dark circles under their eyes had completely vanished, replaced by the rosy glow of healthy, active seven-year-olds. They no longer spent their afternoons staring blankly at television screens; instead, their laughter echoed down the hardwood corridors as they chased each other around with Nerf blasters, turning every piece of antique furniture into a tactical fortress.

I stood in the doorway of their bedroom, watching them meticulously arrange an army of plastic dinosaurs across the rug, when a warm pair of arms wrapped gently around my waist from behind.

"You're smiling," Vincent murmured against my ear, his breath warm in the cool autumn air. "You usually only smile like that when you've successfully decrypted a particularly nasty firewall."

"Or when I watch two little boys terrorize your expensive Italian leather armchairs with toy dinosaurs," I replied, leaning back against his chest, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat.

"Let them ruin the chairs," Vincent chuckled softly, resting his chin on my shoulder. "Everything in this house is replaceable. Except the people standing in it."

"How are Viktor and Mateo handling the transition?" I asked, turning slightly in his embrace to look up into his dark eyes.

"They restructured the shipping routes this morning," Vincent said, his expression turning businesslike yet completely relaxed. "Without Salvatore’s interference, the eastern seaboard is entirely under our control. The council is unified. No more rats. No more backchannels."

"And Blake and Vance?"

"Federal penitentiary, maximum security," Vincent answered smoothly. "They’ll spend the rest of their natural lives reflecting on the catastrophic mistake of messing with a Moretti."

I nodded, feeling a profound sense of closure settling deep within my bones. My suitcase was still packed in the guest room upstairs, sitting quietly beside my old leather bag, but the urgency to leave had dissolved into something entirely unexpected.

"Good," I whispered. "Because I think the boys are planning to turn the formal garden into a mud-sliding track this afternoon, and you're going to need a very stern co-conspirator to help keep them out of trouble."

Vincent grinned, a genuine, radiant smile that completely transformed his face. "Is that an official application to stay, Claire?"

"Consider it a trial run," I teased, slipping out of his arms and walking down the hallway toward the stairs. "Come on, boss. If we don't intercept them in five minutes, your prized rosebushes are going to become casualties of war."
