Chapter 4 - The Spider’s Web

Blake chuckled, a low, condescending sound that echoed off the marble floor. He didn't look panicked. In fact, he looked amused.

"Claire Morgan. Former chief toxicologist for the federal health department, forced out five years ago after blowing the whistle on a multi-million-dollar pharmaceutical cover-up," Blake recited smoothly, pulling a sleek silver device from his pocket. "Oh, we did our research on you too, my dear. We knew you were sharp. That’s why we let you through the gates."

Vincent’s head whipped toward me, surprise flashing in his eyes. "You didn't tell me your background."

"You didn't ask," I replied evenly, never breaking eye contact with Blake. "You asked if I could save your sons. And I can—the moment I get the chemical composition of that specific compound."

"You won't get a damn thing," one of Blake’s suit-clad thugs barked, stepping forward and reaching inside his jacket.

Before his hand could wrap around the grip of his weapon, the French doors behind them shattered inward.

Glass sprayed across the Persian rug. Three of Vincent’s most elite enforcers—men who hadn't been compromised—poured in from the balcony terrace, weapons raised and locked squarely on Blake’s chest.

Blake’s thugs froze, their hands hovering in mid-air.

Vincent stood up slowly from his desk, the chair screeching against the floor. He didn't draw his gun this time. He just walked around the desk, closing the distance between himself and the doctor until he was towering over him.

"You thought you could poison my bloodline," Vincent whispered, his voice vibrating with a quiet, lethal wrath. "You thought you could buy my estate from the inside out."

"You can't touch me, Vincent," Blake sneer-smiled, though a bead of sweat rolled down his temple. "If I die tonight, or if I don't check in with my associates every thirty minutes, a digital dead-man's switch releases the full medical logs, the chemical formulas, and the federal warrants directly to every major news outlet and federal prosecutor from here to Washington. Your empire falls in an hour."

Vincent stopped dead in his tracks. A cold, calculating silence descended upon the room. The checkmate was real.
