Chapter 2 - The Confession in the Dark

Two hours later, the west wing felt miles away from Vincent’s study, but the atmosphere of the estate had fundamentally shifted. The illusion of safety behind the concrete walls and perimeter cameras was shattered.

Vincent walked into the playroom alone. His knuckles were bruised, tiny droplets of blood staining his right cuff. He didn't look like a boss who had just extracted a confession; he looked like a man who had stared into hell and realized the fire was burning his own house down.

"She talked," Vincent said, leaning against the doorframe.

"And?" I asked, keeping my voice low so the boys wouldn't wake from their exhausted sleep on the oversized sofa.

"It wasn't Mrs. Harper who engineered it," Vincent said, running a hand over his face, dragging his fingers through his dark hair. "She’s worked for this family for twenty years. But her daughter—Chloe—needed experimental treatments for juvenile diabetes three years ago. Very expensive. Out-of-network."

"Dr. Blake," I stated, the pieces instantly clicking into place like a master lock turning.

Vincent’s eyes flashed with a lethal fury. "Blake set up a shell foundation to pay for the girl’s medical bills. In exchange, Mrs. Harper gave him access to the estate blueprints, the security shift changes, and... the auxiliary HVAC control panel in the basement."

"An odorless, slow-acting neurotoxin or organophosphate," I whispered, horror washing over me. "Administered in micro-doses through the central air system, specifically targeted to the kids' zone. It mimics mitochondrial disease and chronic fatigue syndrome, completely confounding every blood panel and specialist Blake brought in."

"Why?" Vincent choked out, the word tearing through him. "Why target my boys? I funded his research wing at Columbia University. I gave him millions."

"Because power isn't just about money, Vincent," I said, stepping closer to him. "Someone wanted you compromised. A mafia boss who is slowly losing his children to an incurable, mysterious illness is a distracted boss. A vulnerable boss. A man willing to hand over his empire just to save his flesh and blood."

"Who?" Vincent demanded, his chest heaving. "Who is behind Blake?"

"We’re about to find out," I replied, pointing to the window.

Headlights cut through the Connecticut fog, sweeping across the front gates. A sleek black Mercedes sedan pulled up the long gravel driveway, unbothered by the armed guards.

Dr. Harrison Blake had returned. And he wasn't alone.
