Chapter 8 - The Hidden Partner

Midnight descended over the Connecticut estate like a shroud of black velvet.
In the subterranean security bunker beneath the main house, Vincent, two of his most trusted capos, and I stood around a glowing tactical display table. We had extracted the master communication logs from Blake’s tablet.
"Look at the outbound routing frequency," I pointed to a pulsating red node on the map interface. "Blake wasn't just reporting to a local lab. Every forty-eight hours, encrypted data packages were being sent to an offshore holding corporation in Zurich."
"And who owns the holding corporation?" Vincent asked, crossing his arms.
I tapped the screen, bringing up the ultimate corporate registry document. A name flashed across the display in bold white letters.
Valentin Vance.
Vincent’s breath caught in his throat. The room went dead silent, the enforcers shifting uncomfortably in their boots.
"You know him?" I asked, noticing the stark shift in Vincent’s demeanor.
"Valentin Vance isn't just a corporate investor," Vincent said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "He’s my primary board partner in the European shipping routes. He’s been my ally for a decade. Or so I thought."
"It makes sense," I realized instantly. "A rival syndicate couldn't break your security from the outside with force. They had to infiltrate your inner circle, weaken you from within by targeting your heirs, and position Vance to orchestrate a hostile buyout of your entire criminal empire under the guise of financial rescue."
"He thought I'd be too broken by grief to notice when he signed away my assets," Vincent said, a dark, chilling smile touching the corners of his mouth. "He thought wrong."

"What’s the play?" one of the capos asked, resting his hand on his holster.
"We don't wait for him to make a move," Vincent declared, grabbing his coat. "We pay Mr. Vance a visit. Tonight."
