Chapter 7 - Awakening

His eyes flew open, wide and clear for the first time in eighteen months.

"Dad?" Leo whispered, his voice still weak, but lacking that hollow, distant rattle that had haunted the room for over a year.

Vincent choked out a sound that was half-laugh, half-sob, pulling his son into his arms with fierce, protective gentleness. "I'm here, buddy. I'm right here."

Across the room, Lucas stirred, coughing softly as color began to flush back into his pale cheeks. He looked up at me, blinking in confusion. "Claire? Are we... are we still playing?"

"No sweetie, playtime's over," I smiled, tears finally spilling over my lashes. "You're going to get better. Much better."

Vincent looked up from his sons, his eyes burning with an intense, overwhelming gratitude that transcended anything words could capture. He stood up, walking over to me, and before I could react, he pulled me into a fierce, suffocating embrace.

"You saved them," he murmured against my hair. "You saved my family."

"We saved them," I corrected softly, pulling back just enough to meet his gaze. "But we aren't out of the woods yet. Blake is locked in the study, but he was just a pawn. He mentioned associates. He mentioned a larger syndicate network backing his play."

Vincent’s jaw tightened, the cold mafia boss instantly reclaiming his armor. "Then it's time to hunt the people pulling the strings."
