Chapter 19 - The Final Page

The handwriting on the final page of Isabella’s journal was rushed, almost frantic, the ink smudged as if she had been writing in the dark.

I leaned closer under the lamp, reading the words aloud in a low, trembling voice:

“I don't trust Harrison anymore. He brings these strange vitamin injections every afternoon, claiming they’re to boost my immunity after the twins were born. But every time he leaves, my heart races, my hands go numb, and I feel like I'm suffocating in my own skin. I told Vincent I wanted a second opinion, but Harrison intercepted the call. He’s watching me. If anything happens to me, look in the auxiliary vault behind the wine cellar. The truth is inside the ledger.”

I stopped reading. The study went dead silent, save for the rhythmic ticking of the antique grandfather clock in the corner.

Vincent stared at me, his eyes dark, burning with a lethal fire that could melt steel. "The auxiliary vault behind the wine cellar," he repeated slowly. "In all the years we lived in this house... I didn't even know there was an auxiliary vault."

"Because it wasn't built by your family," I realized, a chill running down my spine. "It was built by whoever designed the original estate architecture—or whoever had access to the blueprints before you bought the property."

"Come on," Vincent said, pulling his coat back on and reaching for the heavy Sig Sauer tucked into his waistband. "We're going down to the cellar."

We moved through the sprawling mansion like phantoms, descending the hidden stone staircase behind the pantry that led down into the subterranean wine cellars. The air grew damp, smelling of aged oak and cool earth.

Vincent pulled a small tactical flashlight from his pocket, sweeping the beam across rows of vintage wine racks.

"Here," I pointed toward the far northern wall, where the stonework looked slightly newer, the mortar cleaner than the surrounding centuries-old masonry. "Look at the spacing of the stones. It’s a false panel."

Vincent stepped forward, pressing his palm against the center stone and sliding it sideways. With a heavy, grinding mechanical click, a section of the stone wall pushed inward, revealing a hidden, dark corridor leading deeper into the bedrock beneath the estate.

We stepped through the opening into a small, dust-covered subterranean room. In the center sat a single steel filing cabinet and a digital terminal glowing with a faint, pulsing red standby light.

Vincent walked over to the cabinet, pulling the top drawer open. Inside lay a single, leather-bound financial ledger and a collection of micro-cassette tapes.

He picked up the ledger, flipping it open to the first page.

Under the dim beam of the flashlight, the names, bank accounts, and signatures of the real conspirators stared back at us—proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that the plot against the Moretti family went far deeper than Dr. Blake or Valentin Vance.

It led directly to someone we never, ever expected.
