Chapter 17 - The Unseen Letter

Late that evening, after the boys had finally exhausted themselves and fallen into a deep, peaceful sleep, I returned to the study to organize my remaining research notes.
The desk was clear except for a single, heavy envelope resting precisely in the center of the blotter. It wasn't there earlier when Vincent and I had reviewed the shipping manifests.
Frowning, I walked over and picked it up. There was no return address, but my name was written across the front in neat, meticulous cursive: Claire Morgan.
My heart skipped a beat. The estate security was impenetrable; no courier could have crossed the gates without triggering every alarm and camera on the property.
I tore open the heavy parchment, pulling out a single sheet of paper. Inside was a typed message:
“Dear Claire, You solved the puzzle inside the mansion, but every closed door hides another room. The syndicate wasn't just Vance’s playground. Look closer at Isabella’s medical files from four years ago. The poison in the vents wasn't an innovation—it was an encore. — A Friend.”
The room suddenly felt ice-cold.
Isabella Moretti. Vincent’s late wife. The official cause of death four years ago had been acute heart failure following a sudden, unexplained viral infection.
A viral infection that the medical specialists couldn't diagnose.
A sudden, rapid decline in health—mirroring exactly what had happened to Lucas and Leo over the past eighteen months.
The paper fluttered from my trembling fingers, landing softly on the mahogany desk. It wasn't just an assassination attempt on the children. It was a pattern.
Before I could process the terrifying implications, the study door slowly creaked open.
Vincent stood in the doorway, holding a fresh cup of tea, his brow furrowed as he noticed the pale, shaken expression on my face.

"Claire?" he asked, stepping inside, his voice suddenly sharp with alarm. "What’s wrong? What is that?"
I looked up at him, realizing in that horrifying instant that the war for the Moretti family hadn't ended on the airstrip, and the real mastermind was still walking the halls of this house.
