Chapter 13 - The Gathering Storm

The sun dipped below the tree line the following evening, casting long, skeletal shadows across the manicured lawns of the Moretti estate. The air was biting cold, carrying the unmistakable scent of an early winter frost.
Inside the grand dining hall, a massive mahogany table was set for five. Fine crystal glassware caught the amber glow of the crystal chandelier overhead, creating an atmosphere of elegant, terrifying normalcy.
At exactly 8:00 PM, the heavy iron front gates swung open.
Three black luxury sedans rolled up the gravel drive in tight formation. The doors opened, and the four remaining pillars of the Moretti syndicate stepped out into the crisp night air: Salvatore, the aging veteran with eyes like chipped flint; Mateo, sleek and ambitious, wearing a tailored Italian suit; Viktor, the silent brute who controlled the dockyards; and Dominic, the youngest, whose nervous ticks gave away his inner panic before he even crossed the threshold.
Vincent sat at the head of the table, his expression carved from absolute marble. He didn't stand to greet them. He simply poured a glass of red wine, letting the heavy silence of the room weigh down upon his guests like a physical anchor.
"Vincent," Salvatore grunted, pulling out a chair on the left side of the table and sitting down without an invitation. "You called an emergency council meeting without stating an agenda. In our line of work, sudden meetings usually mean someone’s about to bleed."
"Or someone’s about to get caught," Vincent replied smoothly, his voice dangerously low.
Across the room, standing partially concealed by the heavy velvet drapes near the balcony doors, I watched every micro-expression, every subtle shift in posture.
Mateo adjusted his cuffs, forcing a thin, nervous smile. "What are you talking about, boss? We’ve all been running ourselves ragged securing the eastern shipping lanes after Vance’s sudden arrest. If there’s an issue, lay it on the table."
"I intend to," Vincent said. He slid a sleek black external hard drive across the polished mahogany surface. It stopped right in the center, gleaming under the chandelier light like a coiled serpent. "This was recovered from the Zurich proxy servers three hours ago. It contains an audio log of a conversation between Valentin Vance and an internal partner—someone who orchestrated the entire plot to poison my sons from within this very house."
The temperature in the room plummeted instantly.

Dominic swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing violently. Viktor didn't blink, his massive hands resting flat on the table, gripping the edge with enough pressure to whiten his knuckles. Salvatore stared at the drive with a cold, unreadable glare.
"Play it," Salvatore whispered, his voice like dry leaves scraping across concrete.
