Chapter 1 - The Echo of the Dial ToneThe sterile electronic chime of the emergency dispatcher ringing through Arthur’s phone sounded like a death knell in the cavernous Vance estate.

Up on the upper landing, Eleanor’s breath hitched. For forty years, Arthur had been more than a butler; he was the silent, unyielding pillar of the household. He poured the wine, welcomed the elite, and buried the family's darkest secrets without blinking. He was supposed to be theirs.

"Arthur," Eleanor called out, her voice pitching up just a fraction, betraying the first genuine panic she had felt in decades. "Put the phone down. This is a private domestic matter. Sarah lost her footing. She’s... she’s always been unsteady."

Arthur didn't look away from her. His thumb hovered over the screen, the speaker playing the rhythmic, maddening beep-beep of the call connecting. His silver hair caught the crystal chandelier light, casting sharp shadows across a face carved from granite.

"Step away from the railing, Madam," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a register so chillingly calm that the two housemaids near the foyer tables shrank back into the shadows, terrified to even breathe.

"Arthur, I am warning you!" Eleanor shrieked, gripping the marble balustrade so hard her knuckles turned translucent. "If you make a single call, you are finished in this city. You will never work another day. I will strip everything you own!"

"911, what is your emergency?" a crisp voice crackled through the phone speaker.

Arthur raised the phone slightly, his eyes locked onto Eleanor’s trembling pupils.

"Yes, operator," Arthur spoke clearly, every word ringing like a hammer blow against marble. "I am reporting an attempted murder at the Vance estate. The perpetrator is Eleanor Vance. The victim is eight months pregnant, and she has just been deliberately pushed from the second-floor landing."

"Arthur! You ungrateful dog!" Eleanor screamed, lunging toward the stairs, her designer heels clicking frantically against the floor as she realized her absolute immunity had just shattered into a million pieces.
