Chapter 9 - Descent into the VaultMidnight at the Vance estate felt entirely different now. The dark oak corridors cast long, menacing shadows as Julian, Sarah, and Arthur descended the hidden spiral staircase behind the library bookshelf.

The air grew cool and damp as they reached the subterranean level. Arthur slid the gold skeleton key into a recessed brass lock hidden behind a wood-paneled wall. With a heavy, pneumatic hiss, a massive steel vault door swung open, revealing rows of safety deposit boxes and a glowing digital terminal in the center.

"The terminal is live," Arthur noted, stepping up to the console. "The countdown timer for the asset transfer has already begun. We have less than twenty minutes before the offshore liquidation triggers."

Julian stepped up to the screen, typing rapidly. Access Denied. Biometric Verification Required.

"Scan my eyes," Julian instructed, leaning into the scanner.

Error: Retinal pattern mismatch with primary founder profile. Supplemental verification required.

"Damn it!" Julian cursed, slamming his fist against the metal console. "My father’s profile is locked to his specific genetic baseline. Because I'm a step-descendant through adoption protocols, my retinas aren't registered in the primary legacy tier!"

Sarah stepped forward, her hand resting protectively on her belly. "Wait... look at the sub-menu on the screen."

Julian peered closer. Below the main prompt, a smaller line of text read: Alternative Override: Direct First-Generation Descendant or Unborn Heir Bloodline Resonance.

Arthur’s eyes widened slightly. He looked from the screen to Sarah, then down to her eight-month pregnant belly.

"The charter... it was written to protect the direct bloodline of the Vance name," Arthur realized aloud. "The child you are carrying, Mrs. Vance... the child is a biological Vance through Julian’s bloodline link to the extended family trust."

Julian stared at Sarah, realization dawning. "My father was my uncle by blood—our family lines intertwined generations ago. Sarah, your baby... the baby’s genetic markers match the foundational trust registry!"

Without hesitation, Sarah stepped up to the console. She pressed her palm against the optical scanner, and then gently guided the terminal’s biometric sensor down toward her abdomen, directly over where her unborn child rested.

The terminal hummed loudly. A bright blue light scanned the curve of her belly.

For three agonizing seconds, nothing happened. The countdown timer ticked down: 00:01:45... 00:01:44...

Then, a melodic chime echoed through the vault.
