Chapter 2 - The Envelope That Shook the Foundation“Robert?” Evelyn’s voice squeaked, the razor-sharp confidence from moments ago evaporating like morning mist. She took a half-step forward, clutching her pearl necklace. “What are you doing here? This is a private family gathering. You weren’t invited.”

Robert didn’t blink. He bypassed Evelyn entirely, his eyes locking onto Daniel, who was still frozen in his chair with my wedding ring sitting like a tiny silver accusation at his feet.
“Good evening, Daniel. Evelyn,” Robert said, his deep voice echoing in the dead silence of the dining room. “I apologize for the intrusion on Christmas night. However, my presence is necessitated by a grave breach of fiduciary oversight—and a rather urgent notification regarding the ownership status of this property.”
Daniel frowned, finally standing up, though he kept his distance from me. “Robert, what are you talking about? This is our family home. My mother put the deed in my name five years ago. Everyone here knows that.”
A collective murmur rippled through the gathered relatives. Aunt Clara leaned forward, clutching her napkin. Uncle Richard frowned.
Robert chuckled softly—a dry, humorless sound. “That, Daniel, is the greatest fiction your mother ever constructed.”
Robert slid the red wax seal open with a crisp snap. He pulled out a multi-page document stamped with the state seal and a primary embossed watermark.
“Ten minutes ago, an emergency injunction was filed and granted by the State Supreme Court,” Robert announced, stepping closer to the head of the table. “Effective immediately, the title deed to this 12,000-square-foot estate, along with all associated liquid assets, commercial holdings, and trust funds controlled by Evelyn Sterling, have been frozen under suspicion of multi-million-dollar corporate fraud, identity theft, and illegal asset misappropriation.”
Evelyn let out a sharp, choked gasp. Her knees buckled, and she grabbed the back of the mahogany dining chair for support. “That’s impossible!” she shrieked, her voice cracking. “You’re lying! Show me that paper!”

“You can read it very carefully from the holding cell, Evelyn,” Robert replied smoothly. “Or better yet, you can ask the federal marshals currently waiting at your front gates.”
The front gates? But who authorized a federal investigation into the untouchable Sterling family fortune—and how did my quiet departure trigger the countdown to their total destruction?
