Chapter 4 - Handcuffs and Hidden Ledgers“Evelyn Sterling?” the lead federal agent called out, stepping past the stunned relatives with practiced calm. His boots clicked sharply against the imported Italian tile. “Step away from the table, please. Put your hands behind your back.”

“This is an outrage!” Evelyn shrieked, her face turning a mottled, furious purple. She pointed a trembling finger directly at me. “Arrest her! That woman is a scheming, gold-digging thief! She stole my house! She forged documents!”
The agent didn't even glance at Evelyn. Instead, he walked past her, stopped right in front of Daniel, and snapped a pair of heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists instead.
Daniel stumbled backward, crashing into the Christmas tree and sending glass ornaments shattering across the floor. “What are you doing?!” Daniel yelled, struggling against the cold metal. “You’ve got the wrong person! I’m a corporate vice president! My mother runs this family! Arrest her!”
“Daniel Sterling, you are being detained under federal warrants for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, tax evasion, and money laundering,” the agent stated flatly, reading his rights with chilling speed. “Specifically, for utilizing corporate dummy accounts registered under your name to siphon three million dollars from the Sterling Foundation.”
The room erupted. Aunt Clara fainted into Uncle Richard’s arms. Cousins began recording videos on their phones, while others scrambled for the exits only to find more federal agents blocking the perimeter outside.
I stood by the coat rack, watching my husband—the man who had watched me burn my hand on hot soup and told me not to make a big deal out of it—reduced to a sobbing, pathetic mess.
Robert walked over to me, holding out a pristine white handkerchief. I took it and wiped the last traces of soup from my fingers.
“Well executed, Elena,” Robert murmured quietly, so only I could hear. “The prosecution has everything they need. The board of directors has already voted unanimously to strip Daniel of his title. He has zero access to funds, zero legal representation, and zero assets.”
Daniel caught my eye from across the room, his face pale, tears streaming down his cheeks. “Elena... please,” he choked out, his voice cracking with utter desperation. “Please help me. Call your father’s old contacts. Tell them it’s a misunderstanding. We’re married! We’re a family!”
I walked slowly across the shattered glass, stopping just inches away from him. I looked down at the steel cuffs binding his wrists, then up into his terrified eyes.

“We were a family, Daniel,” I whispered softly, letting every word sting like acid. “Until you decided that my dignity was worth less than your mother’s approval. Enjoy your Christmas Eve.”
With Evelyn and Daniel both facing decades behind bars, who was the mysterious mastermind pulling the strings behind the scenes—and why did Robert bow deeply to me as I walked out the front door?
