Chapter 8 - Ashes to EmpireSix months later, the Sterling Global corporate headquarters in downtown Manhattan hummed with a renewed, high-powered energy. The toxic corporate culture fostered by Evelyn’s tyrannical decades of leadership had been completely gutted. Out with the old, corrupt executives; in with a transparent, innovative executive board that I personally selected.

I sat behind the massive mahogany desk in the corner office—the very office Evelyn used to lock me out of whenever she visited, forcing me to wait in the lobby like an unwanted solicitor.

My phone chimed on the desk. It was an automated notification from the federal penitentiary system.

“Inmate #84920-Evelyn Sterling has submitted a formal grievance request for visitor access.”

I swiped the notification away with a flick of my finger without a second thought. There was nothing left to say. There was nothing left to fix.

The door to my office opened softly, and Robert walked in, carrying a thick leather-bound portfolio containing our quarterly growth projections. “The London acquisition went through smoothly this morning, Elena,” Robert reported with an approving smile. “Stock prices are up thirty-four percent since the restructure. You’ve officially cemented yourself as one of the youngest billionaire CEOs in the country.”

“Thank you, Robert,” I said, closing my laptop and leaning back in my executive leather chair. “How are things holding up on the personal front? Has Daniel’s legal team tried any last-ditch appeals?”

“None that will hold up,” Robert chuckled, placing the folder on my desk. “His lawyers dropped him last week after his commissary funds bounced. He’s currently scrubbing floors in the prison laundry unit just to afford extra phone privileges.”

I nodded slowly, feeling a profound sense of closure. The nightmare of Christmas dinner—the hot soup, the stinging slap, Daniel’s cowardly betrayal—felt like it had happened in another lifetime.

Just then, my assistant buzzed through the intercom.

“Mrs. Vance-Sterling? You have a visitor in the private lobby. He insists it’s urgent, and he claims he has a letter addressed directly to you from your late grandfather’s personal safety deposit box.”

My eyebrows shot up in surprise. My grandfather’s safety deposit box? Everything he owned had already been cataloged five years ago. What else could he have left behind?

Who was this mysterious visitor, and what final secret was locked inside that long-lost safety deposit box?
