Chapter 9 - The Last Secret in the VaultI stepped down to the private VIP parlor on the penthouse floor of the headquarters building. Waiting for me was an elderly man with silver hair and wire-rimmed glasses—Arthur Pendelton, the retired chief vault manager of First National Bank, who had worked closely with my grandfather back in the 1990s.
“Elena,” Arthur said respectfully, standing up and bowing slightly as I entered the room. “It’s been a very long time. You look just like your grandfather.”
“Mr. Pendelton,” I said, shaking his frail, weathered hand. “My assistant said you have a letter from my grandfather’s safety deposit box. But all of those boxes were cleared out years ago.”
“Not all of them,” Arthur smiled softly, pulling a vintage brass key from his pocket and placing it alongside a heavy, yellowed manila envelope on the glass table. “Your grandfather anticipated many things. He knew that Evelyn Sterling was ambitious, greedy, and untrustworthy. Before he passed, he left a contingency box—one that could only be unlocked under one specific condition.”
“What condition?” I asked, leaning forward.
“The total financial and legal collapse of the Sterling family dynasty through corporate fraud,” Arthur replied smoothly. “He knew that Evelyn’s arrogance would eventually lead to her own undoing. And he wanted to ensure that whoever inherited the empire had absolute proof of something much larger than embezzlement.”
My heart skipped a beat. I picked up the heavy manila envelope. The wax seal stamped upon it bore my grandfather’s personal family crest.
I carefully slid my finger under the flap and pulled out a thick stack of old Polaroid photographs, a microcassette tape, and a legally binding document written in my grandfather’s sharp, unmistakable handwriting.
