Chapter 1 - The Ultrasound SecretThe tiny blip on the screen flickered, racing at twice the speed of an adult pulse. But it wasn't the single heartbeat that made Dr. Evelyn Vance freeze; it was the second, faint shadow rhythmically pulsing right beside it.

"Mrs. Moretti," Dr. Vance whispered, her eyes darting between the monitor and my face. "I need you to look closely at this partition."
My breath hitched. "Is... is there a complication?"
"No complication," Dr. Vance said, her voice dropping to a breathless awe. "In fact, it’s a medical rarity. You aren't just carrying one child. You’re having twins. Dichorionic diamniotic twins. But look here..." She tapped the glass screen near the base of the primary sac. "This shadow... It’s a subchorionic hematoma, yes, but look deeper into the pelvic wall. This is a separate gestational environment. You are experiencing superfetation."
The word hung heavily in the sterile air.
"Superfetation?" I echoed, my mind spinning back through the painful weeks of betrayal, the broken anniversary dinner, and the exact timelines. "How is that even possible?"
"It’s exceptionally rare in humans," Dr. Vance explained, typing furiously on her keyboard to print out the enhanced scans. "It means a second conception occurred weeks after the first—while you were already pregnant. The hormones usually shut down ovulation entirely, but under extreme psychological trauma, high cortisol spikes, or rare physiological anomalies, the body can release a second egg."
The blood rushed in my ears.
Weeks after the first conception.
I counted backward with cold, calculating precision. The first night of conception traced back to our anniversary weekend, right before I found Dante with Sofia. But the second... the second conception date pointed to a night a month later, a night when Dante had cornered me at the corporate gala, desperate, persuasive, and convincing me with tearful apologies that he had cut Sofia off completely. He had begged me for a second chance, pulled me into his arms in the back of his chauffeured car, and claimed his rights as my husband.
I had given in, believing his lies, weeping against his chest.
And now, looking at the dual blips on the monitor, a horrifying, earth-shattering realization gripped my chest.

Scientifically, genetically, it was entirely possible for twins conceived weeks apart under those specific circumstances to have... different biological fathers.
Hook: One womb. Two lives. Two completely different futures hanging by a thread. And Dante Moretti was about to find out that his empire wasn't the only thing slipping through his fingers.
