Chapter 17 - The Final JudgmentTwo weeks later, the maximum-security federal penitentiary downstate was surrounded by federal marshals, FBI tactical units, and Alistair Vance's private security detail.

This time, there was no trial, no appeals, and no legal loopholes left for Dante Moretti to exploit.
Sitting in the secure warden’s monitoring office, I watched through the reinforced glass of the supermax visitation booth. Inside the small, sterile glass room sat Dante. His prison jumpsuit hung loosely from his frame; his dark hair was graying at the temples, and his eyes were hollow, reflecting the total collapse of his once-untouchable world.
The heavy steel door of the booth clicked open, and I walked in alone, sliding into the metal seat opposite him.
Dante looked up slowly. When his eyes met mine, a flicker of desperate, pathetic hope sparked in his gaze.
"Lena..." he whispered, his voice cracking. "Thank God. You're safe. The Ghost... he failed, didn't he? But it doesn't matter. You're here. We can fix this—"
"Quiet, Dante," I said, my voice as cold and flat as winter ice in Chicago.
I slid a single piece of paper across the metal table.
Dante glanced down at it, his breath catching in his throat. It wasn't divorce papers. It wasn't legal injunctions.
It was a certified birth certificate and a formal legal document bearing the seal of the state of Illinois, officially transferring all remaining anonymous Moretti family trusts, international assets, and remaining legacy holdings into a newly established trust fund exclusively owned by Julian Vance and my children.
Furthermore, a federal indictment for conspiracy to commit murder and solicitation of domestic terrorism had just been signed by the Attorney General, moving Dante from the general federal population into permanent, lightless solitary confinement for the rest of his natural life.
"You're erasing me," Dante whispered, horror dawning in his eyes as he looked from the paper to my face. "You're taking my name, my legacy, my children... everything."
"You built an empire on lies, betrayal, and violence, Dante," I said softly, standing up from the chair and looking down at him with absolute, liberating pity. "You thought you owned me. You thought I was just a quiet wife who would cry in an empty penthouse while you kissed other women in your office."
I leaned in close, whispering the final truth into the cold air of the cell.
"You didn't just lose your empire, Dante. You handed your legacy to the very man you tried to murder. And you will spend the rest of your life in the dark, completely forgotten."
Dante screamed, lunging forward across the table, but the heavy steel chains welded to his seat snapped tight, yanking him back as the guards rushed into the booth.

I turned around, walked out of the visitation room, and never looked back once.
