Chapter 11 - The Empire of ShadowsThe ink on the corporate merger documents was barely dry, but the shockwaves were already reshaping the Chicago underworld. With Dante locked away in a maximum-security federal penitentiary downstate, the vacuum left by the Moretti Syndicate was massive. Dozens of minor capos, corrupt aldermen, and rival street bosses were circling the carcass, hoping to carve out a piece of the billion-dollar shipping empire.

They didn’t account for Alistair Vance and me.
Seated at the head of the mahogany conference table on the fiftieth floor of Moretti Tower—now officially renamed the Vance-Moretti Global Logistics Center—I looked out at the boardroom filled with forty hardened syndicate executives. Every single man in the room was a veteran of Chicago's brutal gang wars, men who had previously sneered at the mention of Dante’s "trophy wife."
Today, they didn't dare make eye contact.
"Gentlemen," my voice cut through the heavy silence like a razor blade. I didn't raise my voice; I didn't need to. "I’ve reviewed the quarterly manifests. Terminal 4 is operating at seventy percent capacity, and three of our primary European shipping lanes are facing customs delays. That stops today."
A burly, scarred syndicate veteran named Marcus Cole cleared his throat, leaning back in his leather chair with a cynical smirk. "With all due respect, Mrs. Moretti—or whatever you're calling yourself these days—running shipping lines isn't like hosting charity galas. It takes muscle, grease, and blood. You think you can just sit in Dante’s chair and play mob boss?"
Before I could even blink, the heavy mahogany door swung open.
Julian Vance stepped into the room, his long trench coat damp from the rain, his cold eyes locked directly onto Marcus. Behind him stood six armed security operatives from Alistair’s private elite guard.
Julian walked slowly to my side, resting his hand casually on the back of my chair, radiating a dark, lethal authority.
"Marcus," Julian said softly, his voice dripping with casual menace. "If I remember correctly, the last time you questioned a Vance, you ended up shipping contraband out of a warehouse in Gary because Dante demoted you for incompetence. Do you want to test whether Lena's patience is shorter than mine?"
Marcus swallowed hard, breaking eye contact immediately and staring down at his notepad.
"That's what I thought," Julian whispered, before looking back at me with a subtle, reassuring nod.

The transition of power was absolute. But as the meeting adjourned and the executives scrambled out of the room, a cold knot tightened in my chest. Down in the federal penitentiary, Dante Moretti was not taking his defeat lying down. And deep in the sprawling prison yard, he had just made a phone call that would trigger a war.
Hook: A prison cell couldn't lock away a monster’s vengeance. And Dante’s final, desperate move was about to target the one thing Lena loved more than her empire: her children.
