Chapter 13 - The Golden FortressBack in Chicago, our fortified penthouse suite overlooking Lake Michigan was an impregnable fortress. Bulletproof glass, biometric security scanners, and a rotating detail of twenty armed guards ensured that not even a stray breeze entered without clearance.

Yet, despite the military-grade security, an uneasy, prickly sensation crawled up the back of my neck all afternoon.

I stood in the sunlit nursery, watching the twins sleep peacefully in their matching white cribs. One of them—with dark, intense curls—had Julian’s fierce brow; the other possessed the calm, striking features that hinted deeply at the Moretti bloodline. They were six months old now, innocent, laughing, and completely unaware of the bloody war their parents were waging across the city.

"You've been standing in front of that crib for an hour, Lena," Julian’s voice murmured softly behind me as he walked in, carrying a fresh cup of black coffee. He handed it to me, his touch lingering warmly against my fingers. "Alistair’s intelligence network is clean. Every perimeter check is clear."

I took the mug, sipping slowly, though the knot in my stomach refused to loosen. "It’s too quiet, Julian. Dante isn't the type of man to sit in a prison cell and accept defeat. He built an empire on paranoia and preemption."

"Dante is isolated. He has no money, no leverage, and no guards willing to risk a life sentence for a broken man," Julian reasoned, gently wrapping his arms around my waist from behind, resting his chin on my shoulder. "We won, Lena. The nightmare is over."

Suddenly, the secure intercom on the wall buzzed with a sharp, piercing shriek.

BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.

Julian’s body instantly went rigid. The relaxed warmth vanished, replaced by the lethal reflexes of a man who had survived a syndicate assassination attempt.

"Control room to penthouse," Alistair’s voice barked over the speaker, sounding breathless and urgent. "Julian! Lena! Get the children into the panic room right now!"

"Alistair, what's happening?" I demanded, my heart slamming against my ribs like a trapped bird.

"We just intercepted an encrypted comms ping routed through an offshore satellite," Alistair shouted over the sound of blaring alarms in the background. "Dante didn't give up. He hired The Ghost. And they didn't come for the company files... they bypassed the lobby security five minutes ago through the subterranean water utility tunnels. They're inside the building!"

Hook: The fortress had been breached from below. And the deadliest assassin in the underworld was already walking up the private stairs.
