Chapter 16 - The Ultimate StandThe screech of a diamond-tipped thermal saw chewing through the reinforced steel door of the panic room sounded like a monster roaring in the dark. Sparks showered against the tiny observation port, casting a blinding orange glow across the concrete walls of the safe room.

I looked down at the twins. They were crying softly now, overwhelmed by the screeching noise and the acrid smell of burning metal.

Clack.

I flicked the safety off my pistol, positioning myself directly between the door and the cribs. If The Ghost wanted my children, he would have to step over my corpse to get to them.

Suddenly, the screeching stopped.

A heavy boot slammed against the weakened center of the steel door.

CRASH!

The door buckled inward, hinges snapping off the concrete frame in a shower of dust and debris. Through the swirling smoke stepped a tall, imposing figure dressed head-to-toe in tactical black gear, a suppressed submachine gun raised and leveled straight at my chest.

The Ghost.

"End of the line, Lena," he rasped, his face hidden behind a dark ballistic mask, his eyes gleaming with cold professional calculation. "Give me the drive, or the babies go first."

Before he could pull the trigger, a shadow lunged from the smoke behind him.

Julian.

Blood was streaming down his forehead, soaking his tactical shirt, but his grip was like a steel vise. He slammed a heavy tactical knife straight into The Ghost’s shoulder blade, sending the assassin stumbling forward with a sharp gasp of pain.

The gun flew from The Ghost’s hands, clattering across the concrete floor.

What followed was a brutal, desperate, silent brawl of survival. Julian and The Ghost traded vicious blows, crashing against the reinforced concrete walls, shattering furniture, and rolling across the debris of the broken door. Julian was bleeding heavily from his previous wounds, but raw fury and paternal instinct fueled every punch, every tackle, and every strike.

With a final, bone-crushing grunt, Julian slammed The Ghost headfirst against the steel door frame, knocking the assassin unconscious instantly. He slumped to the floor in a motionless heap.

Panting heavily, bleeding from a dozen cuts, Julian turned around and looked straight at me.

"Lena..." he whispered, taking a staggering step forward.

I lowered the pistol, dropping it to the floor as tears finally broke free, streaming down my cheeks. I rushed forward into his arms, burying my face against his chest as he wrapped his arms around me and the twins, holding us tighter than life itself.

Hook: The assassin was down, and the fortress was secure. But the war wasn't over until the man who ordered the hit paid the ultimate price.
