Chapter 3 - The Devil’s PropositionThe deadbolt clicked open with a mechanical hiss, and Alistair Vance stepped into my cramped apartment as if he owned the building. He was impeccably dressed in a charcoal three-piece suit, his silver-streaked hair neatly combed, his cold gray eyes sweeping over the room before landing squarely on me.

Behind him stood two massive bodyguards who blocked the exit like monolithic statues.

"You're remarkably calm for a woman entertaining uninvited guests," Alistair said, sliding his leather gloves off with deliberate slowness. He didn't sit down uninvited; instead, he stood by the window, looking out over the flickering streetlights of Chicago.

"If you wanted me dead, Alistair, I wouldn't have heard you knock," I said, my voice steady, masking the wild panic fluttering in my chest. I instinctively placed a protective hand over my flat stomach. "What does the most feared man in Chicago want with a runaway wife?"

Alistair let out a low, humorless chuckle. He turned around, leaning against the windowsill, and pinned me with a gaze that felt like an X-ray machine.

"Word travels fast in this city, Lena. When Dante Moretti’s pristine empire starts shaking because his neglected wife vanishes into thin air, people pay attention," Alistair said smoothly. "And when my informants tell me that same wife walked out carrying a micro-drive containing every dirty secret of the Moretti Shipping Syndicate... well, my curiosity peaks."

I didn't flinch. I kept my chin high, channeling every ounce of cold fury Dante had ever taught me through his own emotional neglect. "Who told you about the drive?"

"Let’s just say loyal employees have a habit of changing allegiances when the sinking ship starts taking on water," Alistair replied, walking a step closer. "Dante is tearing this city apart looking for you. He’s putting pressure on the police, shaking down your friends, and threatening to burn half of downtown to find you. But he’s looking in all the wrong places."

"Why are you here, Alistair? To take the drive by force?"

"Force?" He raised an eyebrow, a dangerous smile playing on his lips. "Never. I’m a businessman, Lena. And I recognize true leverage when I see it. You want to destroy Dante Moretti. You want to strip him of his money, his power, and his untouchable status. And coincidence of coincidences? So do I."

He pulled a thick manila folder from his leather briefcase and tossed it gently onto the table in front of me.

"What is this?" I asked, looking down.

"Everything you need to legally, financially, and publicly annihilate Dante," Alistair said softly. "Joint custody battles, asset freezes, offshore account seizures, and federal indictments ready to be signed. But in exchange..." He paused, his gray eyes locking onto mine with chilling intensity. "...you hand over the Moretti encryption keys. And you step into the light as my primary corporate consultant."

Hook: A partnership with the devil himself. But to bring down a monster, sometimes you have to sup with one.
