Chapter 10 - The Fall and the RiseThe gavel came down with a final, echoing crack that sounded like a gunshot in the silent courtroom.

"Guilty on all counts," Judge Harrison declared, his voice ringing with absolute finality. "Dante Moretti is sentenced to consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole. All assets, properties, and corporate holdings of the Moretti Syndicate are hereby seized by the federal government, with controlling shares transferred to the plaintiff, Lena Moretti, under emergency marital asset restitution laws."
Dante didn't scream. He didn't yell.
As the federal marshals slapped heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists and dragged him away toward the holding cells, Dante simply stared at me with hollow, defeated eyes. He had lost everything—his money, his freedom, his legacy, and the empire he had built on lies and blood.
Six months later, the spring sun shone brightly over the Chicago skyline, casting a warm golden glow across the private balcony of my penthouse overlooking Lake Michigan.
The Moretti name was history. In its place, the Vance-Moretti Foundation stood tall, operating as Chicago’s largest legitimate philanthropic shipping and logistics enterprise, with Alistair as CEO and me as the majority stakeholder.
Inside the nursery, two soft, rhythmic cries broke the afternoon silence.
I walked into the pastel-painted room, smiling softly as I looked down at the twin cribs. They were healthy, strong, and growing faster every day. Genetic tests had confirmed what we already knew in our bones: one child carried the sharp, calculated intensity of Dante’s lineage, while the other carried the resilient, untamed spirit of Julian—who now sat quietly in the rocking chair by the window, holding a sleeping infant against his chest with surprising gentleness.
Julian looked up, meeting my eyes with a warm, steady gaze. "Feeding time is over, mama. Looks like you've got your hands full for the next eighteen years."
I walked over, leaning against the back of his chair and looking down at the baby in his arms.
"I spent five years waiting for a man who didn't see me," I whispered, resting my hand gently on Julian's shoulder. "I'm done waiting. Now, I write the rules."
Julian smiled, wrapping his free arm around my waist as we watched the Chicago sun dip below the horizon, painting the city in shades of gold and fire.
