Chapter 5 - The Gala TrapThe Grand Ballroom of the Palmer House Hilton glittered with crystal chandeliers, champagne towers, and the elite of Chicago’s high society. Flashbulbs popped blindingly as politicians, corporate moguls, and socialites mingled under the watchful eyes of private security.

And right in the center of the room stood Dante Moretti.
He wore a tailored tuxedo that fit his broad shoulders perfectly, but his eyes were hollow, scanning the crowd with restless anxiety. The public sympathy tour had bought him time, but behind closed doors, his shipping ports were facing mysterious customs audits, and his primary financial backers were growing nervous.
The double oak doors at the end of the ballroom swung open.
A hush fell over the room as the announcer’s voice boomed through the speakers. "Ladies and gentlemen, introducing Mr. Alistair Vance... and his honored guest."
Dante’s head whipped around, his jaw clenching so hard I could see the muscle twitch from across the room.
My breath caught as I stepped through the doorway on Alistair’s arm.
I wasn't wearing the muted, pastel designer dresses Dante used to pick out for me to keep me looking demure. Tonight, I wore a custom, form-fitting emerald-green silk gown that hugged my changing figure—still subtly hidden in the early weeks, but projecting an undeniable aura of power. My hair was swept up in a sharp, elegant chignon, and a diamond choker glittered coldly around my neck—a gift from Alistair’s private vault.
Gasps rippled through the crowd. Whispers erupted like a swarm of angry hornets.
Isn't that Dante Moretti’s wife? Why is she with Alistair Vance?
Dante pushed through the crowd, his face pale with fury, his footsteps thunderous as he marched straight toward us.
"Lena!" Dante roared, ignoring the social etiquette of the room as he grabbed my wrist. "What the hell do you think you're doing? Get away from this animal."
Alistair didn't even flinch. He simply raised a hand, and four federal marshals—flanked by Alistair’s private security—stepped out from the shadows, blocking Dante’s path.
"Mr. Moretti," one of the federal agents said crisply, flashing a badge. "Dante Moretti, you are being served with a federal injunction freezing all corporate assets of the Moretti Shipping Syndicate, pending an investigation into money laundering, corporate fraud, and smuggling."
Dante froze, his hand dropping from my wrist as if he had been burned. He looked from the federal agent to Alistair, and finally, his dark eyes locked onto mine, filled with absolute betrayal.
"You..." Dante whispered, his voice trembling with disbelief. "You did this?"
I stepped closer to him, my voice carrying clearly across the suddenly silent ballroom.
May you like
"This is just the anniversary present you deserved, Dante," I whispered coldly. "Five years of waiting for you to see me. Now, you’ll spend the rest of your life watching me destroy everything you built."
Hook: The handcuffs didn't click into place just yet, but the trap had snapped shut. And Dante was about to learn that his wife was no longer his prisoner—she was his executioner.
