Chapter 8 - The Ghost from the PastThe rain hammered against the reinforced glass of the safehouse penthouse, blurring the lights of Chicago into streaks of neon color. I sat at the mahogany desk reviewing the latest court filings when a low chime echoed from the private elevator.

Only Alistair—or someone with his express authorization—had the biometric keycode.
The elevator doors slid open, but it wasn't Alistair who stepped out.
It was a man I hadn't seen in six years.
He was taller than Dante, broader in the shoulders, with messy dark hair plastered to his forehead from the rain and a jagged scar running along his jawline. He wore a simple leather jacket, but the presence he carried filled the room instantly—raw, dangerous, and entirely untamed.
Julian Vance. Alistair’s estranged younger brother, and the man Dante Moretti had tried to assassinate five years ago to secure his monopoly over the shipping docks.
I stood up slowly, my hand instinctively resting over my stomach. "Julian. You’re supposed to be dead."
Julian offered a tired, cynical smile, wiping water from his face as he walked deeper into the room. "Dante was thorough, I'll give him that. He blew up my yacht off the coast of Montauk, planted false evidence, and paid off enough federal agents to ensure my name was scrubbed from the registry of the living. But dying is easy when you have friends in low places, Lena."
My mind raced, connecting dots that had been scattered in the dark for half a decade. "You... you were the man who met me at the art gallery in Paris six years ago, right before Dante swept in and courted me. You weren't a stranger. You were hiding from him."
"And Dante stole you away while I was running for my life," Julian said, his voice dropping an octave as he stopped a few feet away from me. His dark eyes flicked down to my midsection, lingering there with a profound, terrifying intensity. "Alistair told me everything on the phone tonight. About the divorce. About the trial. And... about the medical anomaly."
The air in the room grew suffocatingly thick.
"Julian, don't," I whispered, stepping back.

Julian closed the distance between us with startling speed, gently catching my hand. He looked down at my stomach, his thumb lightly brushing against my wrist. "When Dante drugged my drink and tried to burn me alive, I lost everything. But looking at you now... realizing the timeline of that night a month after your anniversary..." He looked up, his eyes burning with fierce emotion. "One of those babies is mine, isn't it, Lena?"
Hook: The ultimate betrayal wasn't just Sofia Vale. It was the fact that the bloodline Dante Moretti guarded so viciously might belong to the very man he tried to murder.
