Chapter 10 - The Queen of Hawthorne EstateThree months later, the headlines in the Chicago Tribune did not mention charity galas or real estate empires.

They whispered about something much more terrifying.

The complete, bloodless corporate and territorial takeover of the Rostov Syndicate by a mysterious new coalition known simply as the Carter-Vale Foundation.

Inside the newly renovated Hawthorne Estate ballroom, the afternoon sunlight streamed through the restored stained-glass windows, casting rainbows across the floor.

At the center of the room sat a brand-new, custom-built, matte-black Steinway concert grand piano—its internal action modified by hand, its strings tuned to absolute, terrifying perfection.

Elena Vale stood by the tall arched window, wearing a tailored midnight-blue silk suit, her dark curls pinned back with a diamond-encrusted hairpiece shaped like a tuning wrench.

Behind her, footsteps approached on the hardwood floor. Strong, familiar arms wrapped around her waist, and a warm chin rested softly on her shoulder.

“The Board of Directors is waiting in the library,” Dominic murmured against her neck, his voice rich and amused. “They want to know if you’re going to approve the acquisition of the European shipping ports today.”

Elena turned in his arms, smiling up at her husband, her dark eyes sparkling with mischief and absolute power.

“Tell them the board meeting is adjourned,” Elena whispered, kissing him lightly on the cheek. “I have a rehearsal to finish.”

She walked over to the grand piano, pulled off her rings, and sat down on the velvet bench.

As her fingers struck the first brilliant, thundering chord of the Etude of the Broken Horizon, Dominic leaned against the curve of the piano, watching her with the fierce, unconditional devotion of a man who knew he had captured lightning in a bottle.
