Chapter 8 - Vows Written in LeadThe ceremony took place on the wind-swept stone terrace as the first rays of golden light broke over the misty surface of Lake Geneva.

Only six people stood as witnesses: Viktor, Nora (who had been flown in by private jet and looked like she was ready to pass out from excitement), and four of Dominic’s most trusted capos, their hands resting casually inside their suit jackets where shoulder holsters bulged.

An elderly, nervous-looking Catholic priest stood at the stone altar, his hands trembling as he held the black-bound Bible.

“Do you, Dominic Vale, take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife, in sickness and in health, through war and peace, until death do you part?” the priest asked, his voice shaking slightly against the howling morning wind.

Dominic never broke eye contact with Elena.

“I do,” he said, his voice ringing out clear and absolute across the cliffside.

The priest turned to Elena with a hesitant gulp. “Do you, Elena Carter, take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband, knowing the dangers, the shadows, and the life he leads?”

Elena looked out over the dark waters of the lake, then back at the man who had turned her world upside down in less than twenty-four hours. She thought of her father, of the broken pianos, of the cruel whispers in the ballroom, and of the dangerous thrill of the music she had unleashed.

“I do,” Elena said.

Before the priest could even say ‘You may kiss the bride,’ a sharp, piercing crack shattered the morning air.

BANG.

A high-powered sniper bullet struck the stone altar two inches from the priest’s hand, sending a shower of gray granite dust flying into the air.

Chaos erupted instantly.

The four capos drew their weapons, diving behind the stone balustrade and returning fire toward the tree line across the ravine. The priest shrieked and threw himself flat onto the ground, clutching his head in terror.

Viktor grabbed his comm-link. “Sniper in the eastern pines! Sector four! Move in!”

Dominic didn’t flinch. He didn’t drop to the ground.

Instead, in one fluid motion, he stepped directly in front of Elena, using his own body as a shield, his hand flying inside his jacket to draw his Glock. His face was a mask of cold, murderous fury.

“Rostov,” Dominic snarled, his teeth bared. “He couldn't even wait for us to say 'amen.'”

Elena looked over Dominic’s shoulder, her eyes locking onto the distant tree line where a faint flash of muzzle smoke had given away the sniper’s position.

“He’s using a modified Barrett M82,” Elena said calmly, her voice cutting through the gunfire. “Wind speed is twelve miles per hour from the northwest. He’s aiming high to compensate for the cliff drop.”

Dominic stared at her in utter astonishment. “How the hell do you know that?”

“My father tuned a piano for a ballistics engineer in 2018,” Elena replied flatly, ducking under Dominic’s arm. “Give me your gun.”
