Chapter 4 - Blood on the SteinwayThe elegant illusion of the charity gala shattered instantly.

Screams pierced the air as the elite crowd stampeded toward the exit doors, crushing evening bags, dropping designer jackets, and trampling over spilled champagne flutes in a blind panic. The sophisticated socialites who had mocked Elena minutes ago were now sobbing, shoving each other out of the way like animals.

Dominic didn’t flinch. His expression hardened into pure granite. In less than a second, the charismatic billionaire dissolved, replaced entirely by the ruthless mafia boss who had conquered the Chicago underworld.

“Viktor, status,” Dominic commanded, pulling Elena behind his broad shoulder without breaking stride.

“Four SUV units, heavily armed,” Viktor panted, pressing a hand to his bleeding head. “They bypassed the front gates through the service road. They know you’re here, Boss. They want the shipping manifests from the European port merger, and they brought a cleanup crew.”

Dominic cursed under his breath. He reached inside his tailored jacket and pulled out a sleek, heavy Glock 19, checking the magazine with a practiced, lightning-fast flick of his wrist.

“Get the staff through the panic tunnels beneath the east wing,” Dominic ordered Viktor. “Nora, get the kitchen crew down—”

“I’m not going anywhere,” Elena’s voice cut through the chaos.

Dominic snapped his head around. “Elena, listen to me. This isn't a game. Those men outside are professional killers.”

“I know who they are,” Elena said, her eyes flashing with a cold, terrifying clarity that mirrored his own. She pointed toward the nine-foot Steinway piano standing abandoned in the center of the devastated ballroom. “And they are trampling over the floor my father spent three weeks tuning. Nobody disrespects a piano in front of me.”

Before Dominic could grab her, Elena darted across the floor.

The ballroom doors blew inward with a deafening crash of splintered oak and iron hinges. Three masked men in tactical gear poured into the room, assault rifles raised, scanning the panicked crowd for targets.

“Clear the perimeter!” the lead gunman shouted in Russian, sweeping his weapon toward the center of the room.

Dominic raised his pistol, aiming from behind a marble pillar, but before he could squeeze the trigger, a heavy, metallic sound echoed through the hall.

Clang.

Elena had slammed the heavy mahogany lid of the Steinway piano completely shut.

The sudden, thunderous noise startled the gunmen, causing all three to pivot toward the piano.

“There! The maid!” one gunman yelled, swinging his rifle barrel directly toward Elena.

Dominic’s heart stopped. “ELENA!” he roared, squeezing off two rapid shots that dropped the first gunman instantly.

But the second gunman fired a burst of submachine gun fire. The bullets chewed through the wooden casing of the piano, sending white ivory shards and splinters flying into the air.

Elena didn't scream. She ducked behind the massive cast-iron frame of the Steinway, her fingers darting into the open maintenance hatch beneath the keyboard—the hidden compartment where her father had always kept his spare piano-tuning tools.

Her fingers closed around a heavy, steel tuning wrench with an eight-inch solid brass handle.
