Chapter 11 - The Shadow's Arrival

Six months of peaceful paradise shattered on a humid Tuesday morning. I was sitting in the corner office of my newly established foundation when a sleek, tint-windowed limousine pulled up to the curb. A man in a tailored charcoal suit stepped out, carrying an antique leather briefcase. He walked past my security team with the quiet authority of someone who bought and sold human lives for sport.
It was Victor Montgomery—Arthur’s ruthless older brother, a man who had vanished into European high finance twenty years ago following a bitter corporate purge.
He didn't knock. He walked into my office, placed a cold, signet-ringed hand on my desk, and set down a legal folder bound in red ribbon.
"You played a very impressive game with my sister-in-law and my foolish nephew, Claire," Victor said, his voice smooth as velvet and cold as liquid nitrogen. "But you forgot one small detail. The Montgomery estate was never entirely Arthur's to give away."
I leaned back, keeping my expression unreadable. "Arthur built the firm. You were exiled to Zurich for embezzling seven million dollars from the family accounts."
Victor chuckled, pulling a silver cigarette case from his pocket before remembering where he was and putting it away. "An old story spun by Arthur to keep the shareholders quiet. The original founding charter of Montgomery Global contains a cross-collateralization clause. If the primary heir is convicted of a felony, voting control defaults directly to the eldest surviving sibling. That's me."
He slid a document across the desk. It was an emergency filing with the appellate court.
"I have just posted a twenty-million-dollar cash bond," Victor whispered, leaning closer. "Evelyn’s murder conviction is being appealed on the grounds of chain-of-custody contamination regarding the toxicology report. By four o'clock today, my sister-in-law will be out of state prison."

My pulse hammered against my ribs, but I did not blink. "She poisoned her husband. She hit my daughter. She belongs in a cell."
"She belongs wherever I need her to be," Victor corrected quietly. "Hand over the trust management keys by midnight, or I will dismantle your foundation, your reputation, and your custody of that little girl piece by piece."
