Chapter 2 - The Midnight Raid

At 1:15 AM, heavy knocks rattled the front door of my friend Sarah’s apartment.
"Open up! Police department!" a voice boomed from the hallway.
Sarah looked at me with wide, panicked eyes. "What do we do?"
"We let them in," I said calmly, standing up from the kitchen table where my lap top sat open, displaying a fully drafted legal dossier.
I opened the door. Two uniformed officers stood in the corridor, flanked by Julian, whose face was bruised and swollen, and Evelyn, who was still wearing her stained silk dress, looking every bit the tragic, elderly victim. Behind them stood an attorney holding a stack of legal forms.
"Officers, that's her," Julian pointed a shaking finger at me, his voice pitching high. "She violently attacked me and my elderly mother at a family gathering, grabbed our daughter, and fled! She’s mentally unstable and dangerous. We have emergency custody papers right here."
The senior officer stepped forward, his hand resting near his belt. "Ma'am, we received a report of physical assault and potential child abduction. We need to verify the child's safety and step inside."
"Of course, Officer," I said smoothly, stepping aside. "Please, come in. But before you carry out an arrest or hand over a minor, I believe you need to examine the actual crime scene evidence."
Evelyn stepped forward, her voice dripping with calculated sorrow. "Don't listen to her, Officer! Look at my son's face! Look at my dress! She threw me into a cake! She’s an unhinged gold-digger who is abusing my grandchild!"
"Officer," I interrupted, turning my laptop screen toward them. "This is unedited 4K video recorded less than three hours ago at the restaurant. It includes directional audio."
I pressed spacebar.
The room went dead silent as Julian’s voice echoed through the apartment: Do it now... provoke a visible reaction... make sure she marks her.
Then came the sound of Evelyn striking my two-year-old daughter.
The senior officer’s posture shifted instantly. His eyes went sharp, darting from the video screen directly to Evelyn, then to Julian. The junior officer immediately took a step behind Julian, cutting off his exit route.
"Is that your voice, sir?" the senior officer asked, his tone dropping an octave.
Julian turned pale. "That—that's taken out of context! She edited that!"
"It’s an uncompressed video file with untouched metadata, Officer," I said quietly, walking into the bedroom and returning with Lily gently wrapped in my arms. I turned her small face toward the bright hallway light, exposing the clear, dark red handprint bruised across her delicate cheek. "My two-year-old daughter was physically assaulted by her grandmother while her father coordinated the attack. My reaction was in defense of my child."
The senior officer looked at the bruise, and his expression turned to sheer disgust. He turned to his partner. "Handcuff them."
"What?!" Evelyn shrieked, backing away. "Do you know who I am?! My late husband founded—"
"I don't care who you are, lady," the officer snapped, grabbing her wrist and snapping metal cuffs over her wrists. "You’re under arrest for felony child abuse and conspiracy. And you," he glared at Julian, locking his hands behind his back, "are under arrest for child endangerment and filing a false police report."

As they dragged Julian and Evelyn down the hallway, screaming threats and profanities, Julian looked back at me, horror finally dawning in his eyes.
I leaned against the doorframe, held my sleeping baby tight, and whispered, "This is only chapter one, Julian."
