Chapter 3 - The Secret Legacy

By 8:00 AM the next morning, Julian and Evelyn were sitting in a county jail cell, denied bail pending their arraignment due to the stark video evidence of child abuse. But I knew better than to think this was over. The phrase Evelyn had spat right before hitting my daughter—this girl has defective genetics—kept burning in my mind.

Why genetics? Why use that specific word on a toddler?

I called my private investigator, Marcus, a former federal detective I had hired three weeks ago when I first noticed Julian quietly liquidating our joint marital assets.

"I need you to look into the Montgomery Family Trust," I told Marcus over the phone while making breakfast for Lily. "Specifically, the clauses regarding the inheritance left by Julian’s late grandfather, Arthur Montgomery."

"I’m already ahead of you," Marcus replied, the sound of paper shuffling over the line. "I pulled the probate records from five years ago. Arthur Montgomery left a estate valued at roughly forty million dollars. But the terms of the trust are absurdly specific."

"How specific?"

"Arthur was an old-school fanatic about 'family bloodlines.' He set up a clause: the primary lump sum of twenty-five million dollars remains locked in an escrow trust until the first legitimate grandchild turns three years old. At that milestone, the money is distributed directly to the grandchild's legal guardians for their 'upbringing and management.'"

My breath hitched. "Lily turns three next month."

"Wait, it gets worse," Marcus continued. "There is a disqualification clause. If the grandchild is proven to possess 'severe genetic defects or neurological incapacitation' before their third birthday, the trust deems that branch of the family ineligible. The entire twenty-five million dollars immediately defaults... directly to Evelyn."

The final piece of the puzzle slammed into place with horrific clarity.

Julian wasn't just a coward who couldn't stand up to his mother. He was broke. He had lost millions in bad stock shorts over the last two years, secret debt he had been hiding from me. He and Evelyn didn't just want custody of Lily—they were trying to manufacture a medical fraud case to claim Lily was "defective," triggering the default clause so Evelyn could inherit the twenty-five million dollars and split it with Julian to cover his debts.

And to pull it off, they needed official medical reports showing emotional instability and trauma—trauma they were actively trying to inflict on my baby.

My hands trembled with a white-hot fury that transcended anything I had ever felt before. They weren't just terrible people. They were monsters willing to destroy a toddler's life for a payout.

"Marcus," I said, my voice dead calm. "How soon can we freeze their corporate assets?"

May you like

"If we file a civil fraud and child endangerment injunction right now using the video? By noon."

"Do it," I ordered. "And Marcus? Dig deeper into Arthur Montgomery's death. If Evelyn was willing to abuse her own grandchild for twenty-five million dollars, I want to know what she did to get her hands on the rest of his estate."
