What I didn’t expect was the crisp, high-definition audio recorded from the high-end phone my husband’s cousin had positioned right between the floral centerpiece and the champagne bucket. / Chapter 12 / 20

Chapter 12 - The Corrupt Stay

By 4:15 PM, Victor’s promise came true with terrifying precision. A dirty appellate judge with deep financial ties to Victor’s offshore holdings signed an emergency stay of execution on Evelyn’s sentence, citing "procedural irregularities" in the digital handling of the hospital toxicology records.

I stood across the street from the county correctional facility in the pouring rain, watching through dark sunglasses as the heavy iron gates swung open.

Evelyn walked out. She was no longer wearing her orange jumpsuit; Victor’s staff had provided her with a cream silk trench coat and custom sunglasses. Though her face was gaunt from six months in a cell, her posture was erect, her spine stiffened by pure, unadulterated malice.

She turned her head toward my parked car, as if sensing my gaze through the tinted glass, and smiled. It was the same venomous, predatory smile she had worn right before striking my two-year-old daughter at the birthday banquet.

My phone rang inside my coat. It was an unknown number.

I pressed answer.

"Did you miss me, darling?" Evelyn's voice rasped through the speaker, dripping with toxic satisfaction. "You thought a little stint in jail could erase thirty years of my power? I created the Montgomery empire. You were just a temporary incubator for my grandchild."

"You're out on bail, Evelyn," I said, my voice dead calm. "Not acquitted. You're still a murderer."

"Bail is all I need," she hissed softly. "Victor and I have taken back the corporate board. By tomorrow morning, the court-appointed trustees will be replaced with our personnel. And then, Claire, I'm coming to claim Lily. You're going to watch me raise her to hate the very sound of your name."
