Chapter 8 - The Mastermind's Trap

Inside the quiet expanse of the Montgomery mansion, I didn't waste time admiring the crystal chandeliers or the priceless artwork. I went straight to Arthur Montgomery’s former study—a room Evelyn had locked up tight since his death four years ago.
Using a locksmith tool provided by Marcus, I snapped the antique lock on the heavy mahogany desk and pulled open the bottom drawer.
Inside lay a thick leather-bound journal and a secondary safe.
"Claire, I'm outside," Marcus’s voice came through my earpiece. "I just got word from the State Prosecutor. The emergency exhumation warrant for Arthur Montgomery's remains was just signed by a federal judge. Forensics will be at the cemetery in two hours."
"They won't need to dig up the casket, Marcus," I said, staring at the opened safe inside the desk.
"What do you mean?"
"Evelyn kept a trophy," I whispered, reaching into the safe with gloved hands.
Inside sat a small, amber glass vial labeled with industrial markings, along with an audio cassette tape dated one week before Arthur's death. Evelyn was a narcissist—and like most narcissists who think they are smarter than everyone else, she couldn't bring herself to destroy the proof of her power over the family.
I popped the cassette into a portable player I had brought with me and pressed play.
Arthur’s frail, raspy voice filled the quiet study: "...I know what you're putting in my tea, Evelyn... You think you're getting the estate... but I changed the trust terms yesterday... neither you nor Julian will touch a dime unless the child... unless the grandchild..."
The tape ended abruptly with the sound of a glass shattering.
Evelyn hadn't just poisoned him; she had tortured him into silence when she realized he was changing his will to protect the future generation from her greed.
"I have it all, Marcus," I said, my heart hammering in my chest. "The poison, the recording, the financial trail. It's over."
"Not yet," Marcus said suddenly, his tone dropping into sharp alarm. "Claire, get out of the house right now!"
May you like
"What? Why?"
"Julian just bought a gas canister from a station down the street! He’s out of his mind, Claire! He's heading back to the house!"
