Chapter 18 - House of Cards Collapses
The court session dissolved into an instant legal execution.
With the revelation of the fraud, the corrupt appellate stay was struck down immediately. The federal judge ordered Victor Montgomery, Evelyn Montgomery, and their legal accomplices taken into immediate federal custody without bail under RICO racketeering and grand larceny charges.
As the marshals clamped heavy iron cuffs around Victor’s wrists, Julian stood up from the witness box, trembling with pure rage.
"You ruined my life!" Julian screamed at Victor, tears streaming down his face. "You made me hate my wife! You made me neglect my child! You told me we were protecting the family!"
Victor turned his head, staring at Julian with cold, empty disgust. "You were never my son, Julian. You were just a tax shelter with a heartbeat."
The brutal cruelty of those words hit Julian like a physical blow. He crumpled back into his chair, sobbing hysterically as marshals dragged Victor and Evelyn out through the side doors.
I walked down the central aisle of the courtroom, stopping right in front of the defense table where Julian sat weeping, surrounded by guards.
He looked up at me through red, swollen eyes. "Claire... I'm so sorry... I didn't know... I didn't know any of it..."
I looked down at the man I had once sworn to love—a man who had allowed his mother to slap our toddler, who had sat in cowardly silence while my world was torn apart, and who had ultimately been destroyed by the very monsters he served.

"I know you didn't know, Julian," I said softly, my voice devoid of anger, leaving only cold pity. "Because you never bothered to stand up and look."
I turned my back on him and walked out of the courtroom into the bright afternoon sun.
