Chapter 7 - The Eviction

I stepped out of my car, holding the certified court order signed by a judge less than two hours prior. Behind me, two sheriff’s patrol cars pulled up, their red-and-blue lights flashing against the manicured hedges of the estate.

Julian was standing in the driveway, his hair disheveled, his clothes wrinkled, looking like a manic shadow of his former wealthy self. When he saw the police cars, he stumbled backward.

"What is this?!" he screamed, rushing toward me.

A deputy stepped between us immediately, holding up a hand. "Stand back, sir."

I held up the legal document. "This is an emergency ex-parte occupancy order and asset preservation freeze, Julian. Because this residence was purchased using mixed funds during our marriage, and because you are currently under investigation for child endangerment and financial fraud, the court has granted me exclusive temporary occupancy of the premises."

"You're kicking me out of my own house?!" Julian shrieked, his voice cracking into a high-pitched wail.

"It's not your house anymore, Julian," I said smoothly. "In fact, according to the emergency lien filed by the bank an hour ago, this property is being impounded due to unpaid mortgage tranches you fraudulently backed using defaulted stock options."

"That's impossible! Mom said—"

"Mom lied to you," I interrupted, stepping past him toward the grand front doors. "Evelyn was using your name to sign off on high-risk loans to cover her own gambling debts in Macau. Did you really think she was saving that money for you? She was using you as a financial human shield."

Julian stood frozen in the driveway as locksmiths I had hired began changing the heavy brass locks on the double front doors. He looked at the deputies, then at the house, then at me.

"Where am I supposed to go?!" he cried out, tears streaming down his bruised face. "I don't have any money! My cards are declined! I don't have anywhere to sleep!"

"You can ask your mother for a room," I said, turning at the threshold of the mansion. "Oh wait, that's right... her bail hearing was canceled. She’s sleeping on a thin cot in Cellblock B."

"You monster!" Julian yelled, trying to push past the deputy, only to be shoved back onto the pavement. "You ruined my life!"

"You ruined your own life the moment you let your mother hit my child," I said, my voice echoing through the grand marble foyer. "Lock the doors."

The heavy oak doors slammed shut, cutting off his desperate cries.
