Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Past

The medical report from four years ago detailed the sudden death of Julian’s father, Arthur Montgomery. The official cause of death was listed as cardiac arrest following a rapid onset of aggressive neurological failure.

At the time, Arthur was seventy-two years old, so no full autopsy had been requested by his grieving widow, Evelyn.

However, tucked into the secondary toxicology attachments—a routine lab panel ordered by a junior attending physician hours before Arthur passed—was something that had been completely overlooked. Arthur’s blood contained abnormal trace levels of Thallium, a heavy metal notoriously known as "inheritor's powder" because it mimics natural neurological illness while slowly causing organ failure.

It had been disguised as a degenerative condition.

I called Marcus immediately. "Are you seeing this toxicology page?"

"I’m looking at it right now," Marcus said, his voice grim. "Thallium isn't something you catch from bad seafood. It’s an industrial poison. And guess who owned a forty percent stake in a chemical supply distribution company in 2021?"

"Evelyn," I filled in, my heart pounding against my ribs.

"Bingo," Marcus said. "Evelyn poisoned her husband to get control of the primary estate before he could rewrite his will to leave everything directly to charity. She got away with murder four years ago, Claire. That’s why she was so confident she could ruin your daughter today. She thinks she's untouchable."

"She was untouchable," I corrected him. "Because nobody was looking. But now, I’m lighting up her entire life with a spotlight."

"What’s your next move?" Marcus asked. "If we take this to the District Attorney, they’ll need an exhumation order for Arthur’s body. That takes weeks."

"We don't need weeks," I said, a dangerous plan forming in my mind. "Evelyn is sitting in a holding cell right now, waiting for her high-priced legal team to bail her out. But her lead attorney, Richard Vance, is an old friend of my late father’s."

I grabbed my coat and key fob. "I'm going to pay Mr. Vance a personal visit. It's time to break the enemy's shield from the inside."

Twenty minutes later, I was sitting in the high-rise office of Richard Vance, the top criminal defense attorney in the city.

Vance looked at me over his gold-rimmed reading glasses, a tired sigh escaping his lips. "Claire... I heard about what happened at the banquet. Evelyn called me from jail. She wants me to sue you for slander and physical assault."

I placed a manila folder on his polished mahogany desk and slid it toward him.

"Read page four first, Mr. Vance," I said calmly. "Then decide if you really want your firm's name attached to Evelyn Montgomery."
