Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Well

By 2:00 PM, the news of the arrest had leaked to the local business press. The Montgomery family name, once respected in real estate circles, was suddenly dragged through the mud. Stock prices for their family-owned holding firm plunged by twelve percent in a single afternoon.

Julian managed to post bail using a high-interest bail bondsman after his primary bank accounts were frozen by my emergency injunction.

He called me thirty times in twenty minutes. When I finally answered, his voice was hyperventilating, laced with panic and sweat.

"Are you insane?!" Julian screamed into the phone. "You froze the company accounts?! You put my mother in jail?! Do you have any idea what you’re doing to our family's reputation?!"

"Our family?" I scoffed. "You lost the right to call us a family the moment you let your mother put her hands on our daughter for cash."

"It wasn't like that!" he lied desperately. "Mom was just... she was stressed! We were going to put the trust money into a fund for Lily’s future!"

"Don't lie to me, Julian," I said, my tone as sharp as a razor. "I know about the twenty-five million dollar fallback clause. I know about your twelve million dollar debt to the offshore brokerage in the Cayman Islands. I know you tried to frame your own daughter as medically incompetent to steal her grandfather's trust."

The silence on the other end of the line was absolute. His breathing stopped.

"How... how do you know that?" he whispered, his voice cracking.

"Because while you were spending the last two years treating me like a naive, submissive housewife who would swallow every insult, I was archiving your emails, tracking your bank transfers, and installing spyware on your office desktop," I replied coldly. "You thought you were playing chess against a victim. You were actually playing against the person who controls your entire financial existence."

"You can't do this, Claire," Julian begged, his tone shifting instantly from rage to desperate pleading. "If Mom stays in jail, the board will remove us! We’ll lose everything! The house, the cars, the business! Just drop the criminal charges. We can negotiate a private settlement. I'll give you whatever divorce terms you want!"

"I don't want your terms, Julian," I said softly. "I want your total destruction."

Before he could reply, I hung up.

I turned back to my computer screen. Marcus had just sent over a file marked URGENT: Arthur Montgomery Medical Records.

I opened the document and began to read. What I found in those medical charts wasn't just evidence of financial greed—it was the footprint of a murder.
